Although Cuyahoga Valley is not quite as breathtaking as many other National Parks, it has some beautiful scenery and interesting history. Unfortunately, one thing it seems to lack is adequate parking in its more popular areas.
When I arrived to the Boston Mill Visitor Center in the mid-morning, the parking lot was completely full, so I drove down to the Ledges Trailhead to hike the 2-mile loop along the awesome sandstone cliff ledges.
By early afternoon, the visitor center was less crowded, and I hiked the 5-mile round trip from there to the lovely Brandywine Falls along the historic Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail. Overall, it's a nice park and worth a visit if you're in the area.

This was our first stop on our Upper Northeast Road Trip. I had been once before back in 2017 and I had a good day of hiking back then. This was a stop to specifically see the new Boston Mills Visitor Center.
It was very nice. I love that there is now a proper visitor center and book store. We walked the Towpath Trail for just a bit and took pictures of the Cuyahoga River with the fall colors. There was even a fly fisherman out there, which made for some great pictures.
I picked up a new t-shirt and a few magnets for the travel board. It was a nice afternoon.

My wife and I visited this park Oct 1 -4, 2024. This was the fortieth national park we have visited so it is difficult not to compare it to the other national parks we have seen. Central to this park is what remains of the Ohio Erie Canal which is of historical significance. What we saw of the canal has been mostly reclaimed by nature and is no longer used. The original towpath still exists along the entire length of the canal and is used by people on bikes and hikers. Unlike other national parks, homes, businesses, industries and farms can be found throughout it, which in some ways diminishes the normal “feel” of a national park. There is also a train which runs through the park which takes you on a 2 hour round trip. There are also some nice hiking paths in the park. If I were to rank this with the the national parks which we have visited for “wow” factor, it would be number 40.

A nice little National park the gives great detail to the early canal system in Ohio. There is a variety of thins to see... including the canal and lock, railroad, and water falls. There are a variety of hiking and biking trails to travel. You can see all that is offered there in one day.

I took my 2 kids for a concert at Blossom, which is a very nice outdoor venue. We spent the whole day before the show exploring only 3 of the many parks along the extensive trail. You would need a few days to take in all the area has to offer.

We really enjoyed this park. We hiked the Brandywine trail and the Ledges trail as well as visiting the Boston Mill visitor Center.
The Ledges trail had some very unique scenery and rock formations and we were glad we did it- note: sometimes the footing is rough with tree roots and rocks.
The brandywine trail to see the falls was also worth it. Some stairs are involved to get the best view but there is also an upper viewing platform. We did the brandywine gorge loop as well - it also had stairs, some of which were steeper than average.
I really would have liked the visitor centre to have a film introducing the park and showing notable highlights- the visitor centre was helpful but could be developed more.

We were in the area with just enough time to visit for a bit. We didn’t have time for hiking, and couldn’t do it well for health anyway, so were just planning to stop and see the area. I don’t know how this is even a National Park. We frequent several National Parks, and this is not on the same level as many. Knowing what I do now, I would skip. The hiking views may be different though.
When we pulled up, there was a Park Ranger standing at the parking lot next to a sign that said it was full. The issue was that cars were leaving, no others were entering, and there were empty spaces. He was texting or playing on his phone, so he did not know this, and would not let us in to park. We experienced the same at another lot, Park Ranger saying it was full, with no acknowledgment that cars were leaving and no new ones coming in. The first offered no help on where to go from there and was quite rude. We have visited several National Parks. The Rangers are always so helpful and friendly. They normally want to help families experience the Park. This was the first where the attitude seemed to be the opposite. They didn’t seem to care at all. We found a private lot nearby and walked down a highway to get there. Meanwhile, they had one Ranger stationed outside the visitor’s center to answer questions and help with the passport stamps. No idea why the public wasn’t allowed inside. He was completely overwhelmed.
The person in charge of staffing assignments here must have no idea what they are doing. There are also many private businesses operating within the Park. It takes away from the experience and cheapens it.
All in all, the experience of the nature is underwhelming, but the Park suffers from poor management, poor utilization of staffing, and poor utilization of resources. Skip it.

This park would make a fine NHP. That Cuyahoga ranks above other parks like Yosemite, Bryce, Glacier, et. al., because of fewer people or ease of access is a farce!

We were in Cleveland for a convention and decided to knock another NP off our list! This is similar to Hocking Hills SP in Ohio so while we only hiked the Ledges Trail and went down to see the Brandywine Falls, we felt it wasn’t as good. It’s spread out so there isn’t a main entrance with a lodge and someone to welcome you (but no fees to get in!). The hike was beautiful and rock formations were cool. Go early in the morning before crowds and bugs! There’s a gift shop.

If you like to hike or bike this place is for you! If you want to learn history, not so much. We were there on a Tuesday, and I expected the Boston visitors' center to have a nice film, like so many national parks do, providing history/background, but was told the place (in another area of the park) where I could learn about this area is only open Thursdays-Sundays. In the middle of summer! This was extremely disappointing. It was also extremely hot and sticky, so although we walked two trails (to the beaver dams and the famous falls) the weather drained us too much to attempt more. The best part of our visit was the train ride (separate review on that). We found the driving maps available to be confusing; we had to turn it upside down to make sense of it (and we are highly experienced). Regarding the beaver trail, the map says its 1.1 miles one way, but it sure seemed longer than that! Across the street there is a "visitor's area" but it's unstaffed but it was air conditioned! The signs said the beaver trail was "south" but there were no signs signaling that direction; add them please! We had to stop a bicyclist who had come from Peninsula to make sure we were walking in the right direction. (We were there early afternoon so we didn't see any beavers.) The restrooms at this trail were clean (not port-a-johns), and this was the case throughout the park. Overall: if you love the outdoors this is a great place, but just to tour the park it can't compare to the majesties you see at other well known national parks. Also unusual was that you will pass through some small towns; seems like you go in/out of park grounds.

Looking to go and take our bikes. What attractions are you able to bike to and what town would be best to stay in to get on the bike path to visit the waterfalls and ledges. Not even sure how far they are from any
Little town. Thinking of Penninsula ?

The train has a bike and ride pass. I’d suggest taking the Towpath Trail in one direction then take the train to get back. It’s 19.5 miles and covers the park from one end to the other and hits all the locations you mentioned. All it takes to flag the train down is to wave your hands above your head at the conductor. More importantly, please arrive 10 minutes prior to the train’s scheduled arrival, you can pay your fare when you board or at any park visited center.
Passes are $50 and are not included with the National Park Annual Pass.
At this time there are two places to stay inside the park itself.

There’s some camping spots in the area as well that are managed and clean but there’s no overnight parking in the park. The outside camping require permits and there isn’t any BLM land in Ohio for free camping.

Isn't there any way to find the GPS coordinates to the parking lot for Brandywine Falls? Doing a quick driveby and really would like to just navigate to the parking site via Google maps instead of having to manually find my way.

We just plugged in as example Boston Mills parking or Brandywine Falls parking and google maps directed us right to the parking lot.

What are the your favorite towpath areas to bike? We will bike out/back about 15-20 miles each way. We will be there 2 days. And, can anyone recommend hotels near the trail heads (prefer Marriott properties). Thanks.

This was my first time there and we just hiked and did not bike, but the bike paths I saw looked very mice but I do not recall the names

Almost all trails are hard packed crushed limestone good for hiking, running, biking or dog walking. Dogs are allowed on almost all the trails. Some are different levels depending of length, elevation change, or path walking material. For instance Brandywine Falls is 90% a boardwalk with some up and down step sections. The towpath that runs the length of the park is pretty flat crushed packed limestone. The beaver marsh is a flat board walk. The Ledges trail goes up and down on a dirt path and has some tree roots in spots to walk over, I would not recommend to walk the Ledges in sandals.

Planning to visit for two days this August. Has anyone visited recently that can share how the park is set up during this COVID-19 pandemic? Are the trails/routes for Brandywine Falls and The Ledges open? Bike and kayak rentals open? Train open? Etc.? Any watch-outs during this pandemic? Thanks.

We were there in late June, the visitor center was outdoors under a tent. The restrooms and gift shop were open, masks required in the gift shop. The tow path was open you could walk along the canal and under the overpasses of the highway. The Brandywine area was open, you could park and then walk on the upper/lower boardwalks to see the falls. We were able to enjoy the park, even with the restrictions they had in place.

My mom and I will be traveling to CVNP in Nov for her birthday. Does anyone have a opinion on a hotel close to the Park? Preferably near the main entrance.

We stayed last week at the Quality Inn in Richfield. Great location in the center of the park about 4-5 miles west of the town of Peninsula. Price was good value for the cost and our room was very clean.

Can you take a wheelchair along some of the paths here? I know there will be portions we can’t but is there enough area we could to enjoy it?
撰写日期:2019年5月13日
Yes. A good deal of the trails are paved or limestone and the Towpath is fairly level.
撰写日期:2019年5月14日
A small sign is at the Visitor Center at Boston Mills and there are signs at the north and south ends of the park along the main north / south road that runs through the center of the park.
撰写日期:2021年6月21日
As the others said, yes you can hike or bike back. I agree with Teresa’s answer to check the train schedule and be prepared.
