Because it's called a dome that is what I expected to see. It was more of a hill and lots of rubble from being dug through. It was absolutely awesome to see obsidian and its natural place. Highly recommended.

What kid doesn’t like a big pile of rocks? Especially obsidian, pumice and lava rock. It is on every map and marked on the road. Prepare to get dusty looking for snowflake obsidian.

I've never seen so much obsidian in my entire life. And such huge obsidian stones. As big as cars! If you're up for driving several miles on a dirt road in the mountains--some cars may not be up for it--go for this. When you get to the end of the dirt road (again, recommend four-wheel-driven autos only), hike up to the top of the "dome." There's some amazing formations at top where the rocks formed years and years ago. A fun and different experience. And the view from the top of the dome is beautiful.

The Obsidian dome is one of the many places that one can experience the immensity and the history of the volcanic activity in the Mammoth Lakes area! It's always a factor road in a little confusing my suggestion is to take the first obvious pull off there's not much parking and walk up the trail that you can see at the gate.

Having minored in Geology, I really wanted to see this place. I wasn’t sure what to fully expect since the reviews were somewhat touch and go with detail. I think visitors should be prepared for a completely unpaved road where you have moments of thought such as “am I going the right way?” Be prepared for not seeing an actual dome like some football stadium dome. This is an old volcanic area where dome means something different. What you can expect is some amazing rock formations and a true geological wonder and some awesome obsidian. The drive itself wasn’t bad, I did it in my year old Honda Pilot but definitely would’ve felt more comfortable in a Jeep or something more rugged. We passed a small parking turn off but kept going. Finally got to a much wider area where you could see a trail along the side of the dome and at the bottom a metal railing to stop cars from going up. That is where we stopped and hiked up. Afterwards, we tried going farther back to make sure we didn’t miss anything but the trail got more narrow and rough for my liking. Overall great views and awesome rocks but that’s it.

Drove until my compact was overwhelmed with a road too rough. Beautiful surroundings and more obsidian than I've ever seen before.

We had a great time at Obsidian Dome. Before arriving, we had done a limited amount of reading about it which made the visit a 5. Without reading about it, it might have been a 4.

We followed a trail up to the top which was about .3 miles past Parking Spot 1 (Google Maps). A short hike up a gentle grade takes you to the top of the dome. There a couple of unmarked paths to follow which take you past very interesting rock formations and rocks. We lucked out because we ran into a geologist who explained a few things to us.

Some families we're wandering about. Some folks were scrambling up the side of the dome or around rock formations on top the the dome. There was still some snow so snowballs were flying on occasion.

It's not a go to destination so human traffic was light.

The road in is mostly dirt but our VW Passat could handle it easily.

This is such an interesting place. There is obsidian and pumice on this dome. It is colored with different minerals and rocks with different colors.

The road in starts out paved but turns to gravel and is rough. Low vehicles might want to stop before the gravel section.

The trail takes you up to the top of the dome and the views are great. The dome is quite large. It’s a bit difficult in places walking over the rocks though.

Definitely worth seeing. Reminds me of Glass Mountain in Northern California.
