This museum has a great location. But the experience did not live up to what we read or what we were told on entry. The Dig was clearly only for very young children/toddlers. And the hands-on area had literally only one live animal to touch (cockroach). Staff were disengaged for the most part. The fashion exhibit seemed like to was more for adults. We did enjoy the exhibit on making dioramas and the dioramas themselves (old school). The price of admission (>$100) seems quite high for what we experienced today as a family of 4 with kids ages 7 and 9.

Don’t waste your money unless you have children. Was expecting something along the lines of the natural history museum in London, but this is nowhere close – a few moth-eaten exhibitions, some dinosaur dioramas and lots of screaming kids – all at a very exorbitant entry price. Still shake with anger when I look at my credit card statement and see how much I paid to enter this place….

This was underwhelming to us until we wandered into the Ice Dinosaurs exhibit. This was fascinating and extremely well done. Animatronic dinosaurs will keep the kids entertained, as will some interactive exhibits. This was an area of natural history I had never heard of, which feels impossible since it has existed for so many millions of years. The more bookish traveler will also enjoy the quieter parts that delve into how you obtain and clean fossils. There are several dioramas which are interesting to look at. We happened upon a mobile presentation explaining the difference between antlers and horns, which was a nice bonus. Of the various museums in this area, this is probably one you can skip if the Ice Dinosaurs go away.

This small-ish science museum is a fun way to spend a couple of hours if you have the time. It's not as well-known as The Franklin Institute, but has some cool dinosaur skeletons and is very educational. They have an interesting exhibit right now on skin, both the science of it and its impacts on human cultures.

Several full size reproductions of several dinosaur skeletons look pretty good, but the museum in general is very small, dusty, outdated, and rather boring for an adult visitor. 20–30 minutes are enough to see the whole thing. Note that the butterfly exhibit mentioned in some reviews doesn't exist anymore, which was a huge disappointment for me. Really, there is absolutely no need to go there if you don't have kids under 10 or, rather, 7 with you. Visit the Franklin Institute instead.

This was one of the highlights for my 5 and 6 year olds on our trip to Philly. They particularly enjoyed the hands on Outside In exhibits.
Great for adults too, I could have spent more time in the dinosaur hall.
Limited gift shop, we had some difficulty finding something for everyone.

Small enough the kids won't burn out- everything a natural sciences museum should have from dino. bones, dioramas from around the world, hands on dig, and top floor current display of insects magnified, photographed and 6 feet tall.

On the day we visited there were many families and the children were having a wonderful time. There were staff members there to answer questions and explain the exhibits. At Outside In there is a discovery center that features hands-on science. Dinosaur Hall has more than 30 dinosaurs and other reptiles. You can watch a staff member prepare fossils in the Prep Lab. There are numerous Dioramas throughout the museum depicting wildlife from North America, Asia and Africa. All are well done. There is a cafe, gift shop and a fee for admission.

If you can, run, don't walk, to catch the exhibit the museum has about the Delaware River and watersheds. It is top-notch Found the staff super helpful and friendly and the layout and displays very engaging. Fun place for kids.

Based on my observations of the children at the museum, the 4-11 year olds were enjoying the museum. Most the the 12+ children appeared disinterested.

Best deal is go on the parking websites for philadelphia, I think it's SP+, and you can get a discount voucher for their garages. I always park at the JFK house on 19th and JFK it's about a two block walk up 19th to the side entrance to the academy and on the weekends if you pay online it's $12.

We have used it several times. It costs a few bucks but is worth it for the convenience.

I just was there for a day visit. I didn't even know the museum had sleep over events. Sorry I couldn't help :(. I think your best bet is to call the museum and ask that question:

At least two hour though I would plan on half a day. It depends on who is with you and the interest and attention span of the participants.

I was there with a 4 and a 12 year old, and spent about 2.5-3 hours. It was a little long, and the younger child was getting bored. The age gap didn't help, so doing things with one child was sometimes less interesting for the other. I think 2 hours could have been very sufficient.
Take a little time to map out a plan, too. We spent a bit of time bouncing back and forth from one area to the other to try and find things, which wasted some time and tired the kiddos a little.

10 minutes, 15 minutes if you walk slowly.
If you enlarge the map for site you can see the (30th Street) train station, just across the river. The museum is effectively at 19th street, so including the bridge it is 11 city blocks (not avenue blocks) east.
