When we travel for holidays or vacation, we try to get in some rock gym time. The gym has a lot of routes of various difficulties and has a massive arch for lead climbing that is about the tallest I've seen. Bouldering routes are interspersed with top roping routes around the perimeter of the gym as well as on the center pillar. Routes use color coded holds to help keep track of the route. Some of the routes my climber tried were quite tricky to figure out, so that's a plus.
Bathrooms were clean, refreshment offerings were a bit limited (one bottled beverage machine and one snack machine). Food is available at places outside the gym, say the brewery next door or the casino just down the street.
The gym is a bit dark, but your eyes do adjust.
Not much in the way of equipment for sale, with the only shoes for sale ones that were rental shoes at the gym previously.
Still, it's accessible easily by subway (Market-Frankford line), which is great as parking is tough in that part of Philly. Next time, we will part at 69th street and take the subway in.
We were very impressed by the overall friendliness of the staff, which was a nice change from other gyms.
We went right after Thanksgiving and although the gym was warmer than outside, it was cool. I wore my fleece hat and I was comfortable. The climber I was belaying was comfortable in a t-shirt and shorts. We would go back.

When visiting Philadelphia one of our kids wanted to go work out. Go Vertical is ideally located if you are staying in Center City (near the typical tourist haunts), as we were. We hopped on the Market-Frankford metro and got off at Girard (as we have a child in a wheelchair and Spring Garden is not Accessible) with a fun ten minute walk to Go Vertical. The men who were working when we arrived were friendly, helpful, and professional. They clearly take safety seriously (which is great!), and made it fast and easy for me to fill out waivers and pay, so as to get right to climbing. They have two auto belay stations and a wall for bouldering. Other climbers there were friendly and offered to belay my son (so he could do other routes). I would absolute recommend Go Vertical as fun, safe stop.

I climb regularly at a gym in New York, so when I was in Philly for work I decided to try this place out. This gym is very dark inside, and is very clearly for people who climb seriously. What was rated as easy (5.7) here is equivalent to an intermediate climb 5.10) at any of the other half dozen gyms I've been to across the country. Staff admits that many people complain about this, and they told me that their professional route center is a professional climber not someone who does this for fun. Know what you're getting into before you go here.

Being a single dad it's hard to spend time with a fourteen year old son. You are no longer the Kool dad and they have there own friends they want to be with. So for his bday We climbed out of the box and went vertical. We spent a solid 3 hours and learned a lot. We opted for the1 hour private trainer which taught you how to climb and be a ground person. Also how to put on the gear. After that we could go on our own and still have the access to our trainer if needed. My son and I laughed , we competed , and we gained a trust and respect for one another. On the way home he curled up in the front seat and fell asleep like he was 5. Dad outlasted him for one more day. So next time you think you can't keep up with your teenager anymore. Take them vertical. Haven't seen him that tired since disney!

Had an awesome time here on a busy weekend day. We were a group of first time climbers and the instructors we had were fabulous. They helped us a lot and were genuinely interested in each one of us getting to climb well. Place is so cool inside, smells a little but hey it's a gym. Lockers are available for your belongings which was great!
One thing I do have to say, is at all costs avoid the older lady at the"front desk". She will ruin anyone's experience. She is miserable and rude.Just a heads up, don't let your initially experience with her (who unfortunately you deal with first) steer you away...

Have fun!

INTRO:

I'm an absolute non-climber, but I do work out frequently, so i wanted to try something new. No one I knew was interested in rock wall climbing so after some searching, and being turned away from another place (Elite climbing in NJ) because I was solo, I found Go Vertical, which was able to offer me a beginners class without a partner.

VENUE:

*SUBURBAN GUY CAVEAT* This place in on a side street which is a little sketchy. I took a picture of it which is attached to my review. Its 1 block away from the Sugar House Casino which has had some criminal activity around it. Probably wouldn't want to be there after dark without somebody with me.

That being said, there was a lot of free street parking available even with a block party going on at Sugar House. I was able to park very close to the entrance. No one bothered me or my car (though there were lots of cops around due to the block party).

Inside it smelled like a gym, a little like feet, but it looked clean. There were a lot of routes on the walls to climb. Even on a Saturday with a kids birthday party going on and a lot of climbers, there was still space for my beginners class. It did get loud at times but there were a lot of people in there. The crowd really thinned out at about 4:30, and it was much more quiet, and even more routes opened up. My beginners class instructor said on all other days its not that busy at any time of the day.

The locker rooms were, well, locker rooms. They're like the ones in high school, if you went to a high school with an old smelly locker room that you may get a fungal rash from if you walk around barefoot. It was not the worst locker room I've been in but not the best.

THE BEGINNERS CLASS:

For $65 I got the 2 hour class, a day pass and two more day passes to use within two weeks, a locker for my belongings, equipment for the day including harness, Carabiners, a Belay device, and climbing shoes.

Ohhhh the climbing shoes, which smelled like two dead New York rats that had rotted on the floor of a hot steamy South American rain forest for two weeks. My feet smelled so bad after taking them off. When I got to my car I took my socks off and dumped my bottled water on them, showered as soon as I got home. If you can afford it and you really think your going to climb in the future, I recommend buying your own climbing shoes, if only to avoid the smell of the rentals. OK, shoe rant over.

I was in a class with two other first time climbers. They were nice. Bob our instructor was GRRRRRREAT! He was nice, but not overly nice as to be unauthentic. He was very knowledgeable and it seemed like climbing was a life long hobby for him, He took his time and explained everything very patiently. He made funny jokes, but he also stayed on topic and told us what we needed to know. I guess you could say he is an instructor who is a good "teacher."

I learned some basic climbing lingo, safety checks, how to Belay, traversing, bouldering, and top rope climbing. Bob also told me a good place to get gear was REI, but only when they have 20% off sales. There is a one time $20 fee for lifetime membership in their "co-op", but you'll be spending more than $100 on gear, so it makes sense to surrender to the "co-op fee.''

After the class, my classmates and I had the rest of the day to climb. It turns out that a group of three is perfect for climbing. It allows one person to rest and, trust me, you will be taking several breaks through out the day. They were able to take photos of each other climbing while I belayed so it was a symbiotic relationship.

I've been busy with work, so I haven't been able to go back, but my shoes are being mailed from REI. I'll be back soon.

OVERALL:

I think it's a good place to climb. It's big with routes for all levels. If you can get Bob for your beginner's class your golden. When I get my shoes I'll be in there all the time, so see you there!
