As a former passenger in 1964 and being a longtime supporter of the SS United States as a member of the SS US Conservatory, I was invited for a tour. My son and I went, and many memories came back to me. There is a new plan with financing for the restoration and all this ship needs a new home. This ship is a piece of American history and needs a future.

My family and I drove all the way from the Midwest to see this ship because my brother loves this vessel, but everyone can take interest in it. There is so much rich history behind the ship seen in the pier. The ship is very cultural and it is a great learning opportunity for anyone.
First, the cultural aspect of the ship. For this being something to do, there needs to be some flavor in what you’re doing. While the ship is quite literally sitting there, there is so much more about it. It’s America’s flagship and all states (exc. AK & HI) contributed to its construction. So, if you’re sitting there looking at it, pull up information about it.
My Rating for this Category: 5/5
Finally is the learning opportunity. They say that traveling is the best form of learning, seeing this proves that again. Because the ship is historical, it’s a fantastic opportunity to turn your stop there into an enriching history class that everyone can enjoy.
My Rating for this Category: 5/5
We will be driving back out to Philadelphia to see the ship sometime in the future. It’s truly an American landmark that everyone should know about and see in their lifetime. I would recommend people see this ship if they are in Philadelphia in the future.

This ship is sitting on the Delaware River across from IKEA. You can’t enter the dock but you can get some great photos from the area.
If you don’t know about this ship please take a moment to google the conservancy. There are ongoing efforts to revitalize this ship into a hotel/conference/event space.
This ship played a vital part in our nation’s history. All 48 states (at the time) contributed to her construction in some way. Multiple movies have been made about her or on her. Disney even filmed a movie in the 60’s (Bon Voyage).
I can only hope to see her funnels gleaming red white and blue again in my time.

Schitterend schip.

Phila is the home of moth ball ships. We use to love going by the Navy Yard and seeing all the different ones. This one is in a class of its own.

If the grandeur of traversing the Atlantic in comfort and luxury appeals to you instead of a cramped jet, plan on making a short trip to Pier 82 to view the SS United States.
The SS United States represents the very best of its class with an imposing raked bow and twin red, white and black funnels. The design of the ship in 1950 was so innovative that the details of her construction were classified top-secret. She was built for speed and to easily be converted from luxury ocean liner to troop transport ship if ever needed to transport large numbers of troops like the Queen Mary did in WWII.
You can view the ship from the sidewalk outside the dockyard or from the second floor IKEA food court across the street. The ship is in conservancy and actively raising funds to restore it and open it to the public. Consider contributing to the conservancy to restore and open the ship to the public to make this a First Class Five Star Rating!

This majestic ship who still holds the speed record for crossing the Atlantic today lies rusting across from Ikea and Chic Fil A. This ship is worth seeing and saving. Consider donating to the conservancy.

This attraction can be viewed from afar, and while weathered is a great photo op. There are no regular tours as she is berthed in a secure port area. We were only able to see it up-close due to special arrangements. Hopefully in the future a visitors center and museum will be built and portions of the ship will be restored. Look up the SS United States Conservancy for more info.

Sorry not to have seen your question until today. I am guessing you found out the answer but I will write it now. The conservancy has a website with all of the information; the address cannot be stated (Tripadvisor rules) but google SS UNITED STATES and you will find the site as an 'org' and I think you will get it. She is a grand ship to see. Go on a Sunday morning. I found it to be a quiet time in the area. I was able to park, look through the fence and take photos. I am sure that a police officer will probably tell you to move as I am not sure how legal my spot was but it was near the fence just off Delaware Ave (or now known as Columbus Blvd for you youngsters). With her aluminum upper story she just refuses to give up. I do hope she can be saved as a maritime museum now that the Chrystal Cruises (also online) deal fell through two years ago. I applaud them for donating to the conservancy though. She is a wonderful example of US achievement. Try this really great read:
