Even a cold, rainy day at the beginning of April, offers so much Nature to see and hear! Please everyone, wish the Refuge luck in standing up to the bullies at the fish and wildlife, who are forcing the ‘sport’ of painfully killing deer, there.

We happened to see a sign for this as we were driving in the area and googled it later. We decided to stop in before we left town and we're so glad we did.
There are trails around the lake for walking or biking and some boardwalks to get you out over the water. There were some serious birders there, but even amateur birders like us saw plenty. And turtles! I never saw so many turtles in one place before. Even spotted a muskrat!
Parking was tight on a Sunday morning. It seems to be a popular place.

This wildlife refuge has free parking and a good visitor center with a helpful staff. They provided us with a walking map and an offer to borrow binoculars. Most of the people we saw on the trails were serious birders with huge camera lenses and a ton of patience. We saw a blue heron and many waterfowl. But we were there for the hike and my only disappointment is that the trails are pretty flat and smooth. I like a little more challenge. But this a great place to get away. The visitor center also has clean bathrooms, exhibitions and fishing poles.. (bring your own bait and a fishing license.)

My dog and I happened to be go to the park the day they were hosting a monthly birding walk. It was a pity I didn't have binoculars or a proper camera as the tour guide showed us many unique species and provided many opportunities for photos. After 90 minutes, my dog got restless so we continued without the group. It was a pretty packed park and I saw a flock of swans fly overhead within about 30 feet from me. It's a nice oasis by the airport but not a tranquil and serene location.

Went there for the day for a spot of local birding whilst on holiday from the UK. Well worth it although it was a long day partially because of the size of the place and partially because each singing bird had to be seen visually to identify it. Birds seen include both blue and green herons, great egret, tree swallow, Carolina chickadee, cardinals, kingbirds, vireos, gnatcatchers, flycatchers, house finches, catbirds, cowbirds, sparrows, yellow warbler, red winged blackbirds and American goldfinch. Osprey and Bald Eagle are regular visitors but was out of luck. The visitor centre is excellent but they could do with sighting their feeders a little closer so that the birds could be seen more clearly. The main loop is a couple of miles long so take plenty of water if it is hot. There are some viewing screens and hides but none have seats. Worth a day out and easily doable by public transport.

Came here on the 4th of July, so the visitor center was closed. It was hot so we did not walk a lot but found a trail that took us over a marsh and to a lookout tower. I saw hummingbirds, wood duck, mallards, yellow warblers, fly catchers, yellow throats, swamp wren, ospreys, wax wings, and many catbirds. Also saw turtles, butterflies, and dragonflies. Was not disappointed in our short walk. I have family in the city and it was great to see some green. Can’t wait to go back in the fall to see migratory birds.

Found this place on trip advisor and decided to check it out. Our hotel is just about a mile from here. I loaded up a couple of cameras and went for a walk. This place is beautiful!!! The trails are well kept and wonderful. I had a wonderful relaxing walk taking in the wildlife and smelling the fresh air. This is also a great place to go for a run or ride a bicycle. I have been several times now both to take pictures and to run. Plenty of parking. Birding is wonderful here.

We've had the Heinz Wildlife Refuge on our to-do list for some time, but couldn't seem to fit it into a trip to Philadelphia. We finally made it last week and were not disappointed.
We made it to the visitor's center just before it closed, but did see the fabulous Blue Heron made out of recycled water bottles and strapping tape. Very clever and an excellent reminder of the impact plastic has on our day-today life.
We took the loop around the pond which clocked in at 5.9 miles, not 3.5 as advertised. It wasn't very crowded late in the day. The carp were jumping in shallow water, so we were able to see them up close. We also saw many birds and turtles.
The trail is wide enough, but the stones make for an occasionally painful walk. As others have mentioned, the noise from the airport is occasionally distracting from enjoying a peaceful nature walk.
I'd definitely recommend stopping here. The refuge is nicely maintained and a welcome change from city walking.

This is a really great place to go birding. The main trail loops around the whole lake, and is deceivingly long. There is a nice offshoot at one point into the marshes which is also really nice. They offer a lot of programs if you follow them on FB.

Best way to get here via public transportation from center city is to take the Broad street subway and exit at Snyder Ave. Then, take the 37 bus to 84th Street & Lindbergh Blvd (this takes about 20 minutes). Walk south down Lindbergh less than a quarter mile, and you'll see the entrance to the park on the right.
