We chose Chris' for New Year's Eve dinner this year, and had a wonderful time. I'd been to Chris' a couple of times to see bands, but had never had the full dinner-and-a-show experience. The big surprise was that the food was terrific. Every course was perfectly prepared and delicious. The staff was friendly and our server was attentive throughout our meal, despite a packed house.
But the best part was the music. Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Nine delivered an entertaining and unforgettable evening of traditional jazz. Reed is a talented jazz vocalist in the best tradition of the swing era, and her charming personality made the evening a delight. Equally impressive were the members of her ensemble, who performed authentic-yet-unique arrangements of jazz classics with the perfect balance of enthusiasm and restrained, idiomatically-correct playing. They had the entire crowd smiling and cheering. I felt like I had been transported back in time; it was a great pleasure to hear young musicians who truly appreciate and enjoy traditional jazz.
Chris' features name and local artists of the highest caliber throughout the year. The venue is clean, intimate, and easy to find. There are many parking lots near its Center City location, but we chose to take the PATCO train from New Jersey (it's just a five-minute walking from either the 12-13 or 15-16 street stops). Highly recommended.

Went with a group of 40-50 people after a weeding in the area, just stopped for a few drinks later in night
.
1 Chardonnay & 1 miller light beer for $26 seemed excessive.
Later in night sat outside for some air, a friend from wedding had the famous Geno's steak delivery to front, 2 cheesesteaks & 2 orders of fries.
A member of the staff immediately came outside to remind us not allowed to bring food to their establishment. We explained just coming from weeding & only stopping for nightcap. we would hide steaks under table, he IMMEDIATELY took 1 of the 2 bags & threw it into trash can, wasting a perfectly good cheesteak.
I totally understand companies have policies, BUT....
1) Seeing the size of our group (40-50 people) & the amount of money spent on alcohol alone must have been rather large.
2) After asking to not bring food here, we immediately put 1 bag under table to explain we would take it with us.
3) Worker grabbing 2nd bag & throwing out before we could take it was totally unprofessional and downright RUDE!!!!! Ther was no need to throw away food, not allowing us to stash 2nd bag under table with the 1st bag, for later consumption.
4) Cost of 2 drinks seemed excessive, unless the bartender was gouging????

Nice place and very friendly. It’s the perfect selection for a drink after a hard working day. We also taste their cuisine which is fantastic.

I was reading reviews here with no intention of writing one until I read the review by EmmarieNoel from 2018. I've been a regular at Chris' for a decade or so. EmmarieNoel's review is spot on. So spot on that I am writing to confirm it. Covid has changed things a bit. More on that below. I want to add a few more comments. Pre Covid it was like "Cheers" for me. Everyone knew me, and it felt like home. The food is excellent; I don't understand the review that expressed disappointment. Owner/Chef Mark DeNinno (who indeed comes out and sits at the bar every day) said he thinks of Chris' as a restaurant that has jazz. I'll skip his pedigree and just say: it's good. Perhaps the greatest tribute comes from the employees; they hang out at Chris' when they are not working there. The music *rarely* disappoints. Way too many great artists to mention, but I'll highlight Christian McBride, Ravi Coultrane, Bill Charlap, and Pat Martino. One week night I sat at the bar and was surprised to notice Pat sitting next to me. We spent an hour talking. The talent does come up to the bar between sets and it's easy to talk to them. Now. Since Covid: a large turnover in the help, but the core is still there. The tables are farther apart, and ... the prices are higher. Not quite the same atmosphere yet, but I'm sure it will return in time.

Three course dinner and show was amazing. Best jazz in the city. We will be back again soon. Must experience when you’re in Philadelphia

We had a wonderful New Year’s Eve experience at The Cafe. We were in town and looking for something different to do and we came across this place. What an amazing experience! As soon as we got in we were seated and our server Jamie took care of our culinary interest. Our reservation for the evening guaranteed us a 3 course price fixe meal. For my meal I started with the lobster bisque which was ok, I personally prefer it to be a bit more on the thicker side. For my entree I had the pork tenderloin which was very tasty and a perfect portion size. My girlfriend ordered the Smoked Salmon Terrine which she enjoyed. For her entree she had the Pan Seared Striper which she loved. Our dessert options were delicious as well. I had the crème brûlée and my girlfriend had the artisanal cheese offering. We enjoyed the dinner and the attention paid to us by Jamie.
Part of our experience was the dining piece but also the Jazz show as well. Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Nine were the star attraction. This was our first venture into a jazz show and we loved it! The music was great. Chelsea Reed has a magical voice! Her singing and stage presence was great! I think we have found something new to do-listen to jazz while dining, who knew???

Excellent food, music, service and ambiance. We purchased dinner and a show online from club website and were very pleased. We will visit again next time in Philly.

We went here for after dinner drinks and music after a birthday dinner. The live music is really nice and offers a smooth relaxed vibe. I highly reccomend the Manhattan after a steak dinner.

I went in to hear a friend's quintet and have a bite to eat at the bar after paying the cover charge online. During the performance the bar tender engaged in loud conversations with what appeared to be some of his friends and the mâtre d' keep beating time with her pen on entrance podium. Hey folks, I paid to hear the band. On asking for the bill I saw that they were trying to charge me the cover fee again. They removed it, but then I noticed a fee for my use of a credit card. Management needs to clean up this mess.
