A look into History
2021年6月 • 好友
Today I went to the B. Free Post Office. I wanted to mail my students postcards from the 1st post office! The lady working was very nice and yes, the letters get stamped with a special post mark that says it is the 1st post office. Also, within the post office is different displays explaining the history of the post office. I highly recommend you visit and mail someone a letter from there!

If only the staff were nicer
2019年12月 • 家庭
This place was an amazing concept, the first post office still in use! I messed up a postcard and the staff were really rude and unhelpful, didn’t tell us anything about the story and didn’t give us a B. Franklin stamp as i expected. Luckily there was a nice lady nearby to tell us all about it and it was still somewhat an exciting experience!

Lovely museum on the site of Franklin’s home and print shop. Accessible, great displays following the life of Ben presented in interactive, interesting ways.

Small but perfectly formed.

This is reputedly the oldest Post Office in the USA and is worth a brief visit. The fixtures and fittings look to be authentic and if you buy your stamps here you can mail your postcards which will be franked with Benjamin Franklin's signature.

Get a postcard canceled here!
2019年9月
Ben Franklin was the first postmaster general of the United States in 1775 and once lived in this building which is a great reason to visit. I think that this is also the only U.S. post office not to fly the American flag or have a zip code.

We bought some postcards from the Ben Franklin Museum gift shop after visiting that museum which we brought to this post office. The lady at the counter put stamps on it and canceled it with the “B. Free Franklin” signature stamp and then gave us back the postcards. I guess it is better to just get it back right there, than chance that it may get lost in the mail! You pay for the stamps of course.

Great place to visit!

Some say the first P.O in the U.S.
2019年9月
They may or may not be correct whether this is the first post office in the U.S. but it's fun to say it is and send family and friends postcards from there. You can ask when you are there. They don't sell postcards but you can get them next door or somewhere else around town. They postmark with the signature of Benjamin Franklin and it says Philadelphia, PA.

Philadelphia with a Williamsburg feel
2019年8月
I wrote several post cards and bought stamps at the Ben Franklin Free Post Office. The clerk then hand cancelled the cards with a Ben Franklin cancellation which will be a nice souvenir for the recipients.

We also visited the printing office which is part of the complex. A park ranger explained the printing process in the 1700s and proceeded to print some papers on the antique printing press. If you have never been to the print shop in Williamsburg this is very much like it.

No flag?
2019年6月 • 夫妻情侣
The old P.O. is near the Benjamin Franklin museum. I overheard a visitor explaining it is the only USA P.O. which does not fly a flag. Certainly there was no flag I could see.

The inside has wooden fittings and a counter to purchase stamps etc. It was worth a fleeting visit for the figures depicting postal uniforms through the ages and other interesting historical snippets. The front and back of the building were also worth viewing.
