I prebooked our reservations for Glenmont Estates, but if you go early you may be able to get one then. I think it’s 15 max people for each tour. The house was great to see (only 30 mins) as well as the greenhouse & Garage which held his Antique Cars.
The Laboratory held SO much. Do all 3 floors. There is an elevator if needed. So well done & the history here is just fascinating. I truly had no idea he had 1093 patents & of the things he created. He made more than just the Lightbulb !! We truly enjoyed our time at the Glenmont Estates (his home) & Laboratory complex. We were there around 4 hours total. So much to read & see. There is an audio you can play along on your phone, but it got aggravating while trying to take photos too so I stopped audio as you have to enter numbers at every stop. Handset or headphones would be so much better.

It is amazing how many things this man had a hand in inventing. From the pattern area to the two different machine shops. To the music room, photo lab and all the exhibits of his inventions the place is just filled with history. We enjoyed the museum and were glad we stopped.

So much fun to learn about the history of the area and see the workshop where so many things were invented. Definitely worth taking the time to go up to see his house too!

We spent a lovely morning and early afternoon at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. I would suggest using the audio tour features when touring the main building. Make your reservations ahead of time for the house tour. Beautiful home and I feel lucky to have toured the inside. There is a per person National Park fee of $15 at the time of our visit. There are National Park passes at reduced cost for seniors, military, 4th graders...so look into those to save some money.

So glad we went. So much to learn. Also, be sure to visit Edison's house (Glenmont.) Extraordinary man and his accomplishments. We spent a lot more time there then I thought we would.

We came here after visiting the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park. These two exhibits really complement each other, seeing where he began and then what he grew into. This facility is run by the US Park Service, and the Rangers are always knowledgeable about the history of where they are stationed. This was his last, and largest inventors complex. There are several videos to give you some background and history. Then walk through the main building, there are 3 floors to keep you busy, lots to read and see. There are additional buildings on the grounds which, when they are open, are staffed by the Rangers (did I mention they have a wealth of information to share), check the schedule. You can easily spend a couple of hours here if you take time to read and talk with the Rangers. Then take a short drive over to Glenmont, Edison's last home. The grounds are stunning. We didn't get to visit inside as the house was closed when we were there.

There's too much to see if you only budget a couple of hours. The Edison lab grounds are definitely worth taking the time to see, and be certain to book a tour time for the Edison home in advance of your visit, as well. The lab(s) were spread over a greater area than I would have originally guessed, and have been well-preserved/restored. There were several flights of stairs at the labs, but I believe there was an elevator available if needed. The Edison home was impressive, and the guide had the forethought to use a portable PA system/microphone, which meant everyone on the tour heard his entire presentation. (I thought this was a great idea, and hopefully this approach is adopted by other NPS sites!)

Les was the guide and he was beyond excellent! He answered every question. Went into detail of all things Edison. I felt like I was a friend by the end. Actually, he had 3 ‘tours’ while we were there,, and we just followed him wherever he went!

Great museum. This is a National Park site so if you have a pass, admission is free. So much information and history located in the warehouse and on the grounds. You must stop at the visitor center if you want to see the Edison house about 1/4 mile away. The genius of this man cannot be described - he contributed so much to the "growing up" of America that it is hard to fathom. Definitely worth the time to see.

Glenmont- This is the Edison’s residence and an extra add-on to the National Park Tour. You need to purchase admission to the park and then for the residence. Book early because there were only two tours a day for Glenmont when I went. The tour was very informative with personal stories and the house was fascinating as the Edisons were not the original residents so there is an amalgam of artifacts and decorating styles, Definitely a must do!
Thomas Edison park- I had previously visited the smaller Edison site in Menlo Park. This is far bigger and there is a short informative film on Edison’s life in the Visitor’s Center. Then there are various buildings to explore with a guide inside the main house there. The park is like a time capsule as you explore his labs and look at all the many, many inventions that he and his staff created. It was a terrific place for a history buff like me to see! Highly recommend!

There is an external building that is the National Park Building / Gift Shop at the entrance that you can purchase tickets or use a National Park pass to gain entry. Free parking is across the street is a parking lot that is for the museum.

Is the red brick mansion located here - I don't see it on the site looking at google earth. ALso what is the parking situation - is there any nearby and is there a charge?

Edison's home is nearby, but not on the site of the laboratories. We were told that he walked to and from work every day. Also that he preferred to climb the stairs to the second floor rather than take the elevator.
There is free parking across the street from the laboratories. But, again, I don't know about parking at the mansion.

I understand there is a limited number of tix for the tour at 10:00 a.m. and it is the only tour of the day. I would be coming from NYC with a small group and wonder if tix can be reserved if this is the case?

go to the NJ Transit website and put your starting point in. For destination use
Thomas Edison National Historical Park
which it will recognize as the location ((address is 211 Main Street West Orange)
It will give you options for bus only or bus/train depending upon where you are starting.
