The rangers on duty were very nice and took time to tell us about the site. We hiked a bit of the trail, but were not that impressed. It's probably my fault for going in the winter. I thought the sites would be located closer to the visitor center. Admission is free and three mounds are located near the visitor center, but the more impressive mounds require a hike.

Nice monument with easy hikes, great scenery and history.

We stopped here while traveling from Minneapolis/St.Paul to Dubuque and did some afternoon hiking. We followed the trail from the visitor center to Eagle Rock, Fire Point, the Little Bear Mound Group, the Great Bear Mound Group and Twin Views. On the other side of the visitor center we followed the trail and walked across the Yellow River Bridge. The views of the Mississippi River were fantastic, and we learned a lot about the mounds during our hike and talking to the rangers, who were all very helpful. Don't skip the visitor center, it is very well done. Also try to walk the Yellow River Bridge Trail - the waters of the Yellow River were almost eerie. We had our dog with us, and she was welcome on all these trails.

Extensive hiking required.

Effigy mounds is in a beautiful area. To see all of the mounds except 3 small ones near the visitor center requires a hike of about 2 miles with an elevation gain if 350 feet. I would recommend this area to hikers for the views and unique mounds. The visitor center museum is small and the film is being redone so our visit was pretty short.

Beautiful hike to learn some Indian history

Very interesting piece of local Indian history. It is a gradual steep climb to reach the top. Beautifully groomed wide trails. Great overlooks with the chance of seeing eagles. We did a 5 mile hike and didn’t see all of the vistas. Truly an enjoyable hike

Great National Monument

Excellent national monument. We came on a beautiful Sunday and it was also Father’s Day so it was probably a little busier then normal, but not even remotely crowded. The park staff was incredibly friendly and very informative. One guy in particular knew a lot about the mounds in the area. The trails were beautiful. The further you walked the fewer people there were. The overlooks we’re definitely worth the hike. The mounds are well maintained and everyone there was respectful of them. Great history and imagining what it was like for the people who built them. The visitor center and museum are very well maintained. The museum has lots of good information. Only complaint we planned on having a picnic there and there were no picnic tables or areas to eat. Otherwise amazing national monument and we would go again.

Totally worth it

I visited with my three little girls, and we had a great time. The visitor center is informative. The rangers were nice. The hike up onto the bluffs to see the mounds was not too challenging, and the mounds were interesting. We expected the mounds to be bigger. That said, their size allowed us to really appreciate the shapes created by the Native Americans. The views of the Mississippi from the bluffs were also spectacular. We added two hours to our road trip to see this, and it was worth it.

Must See NPS Site

Smaller NPS site but one you shouldn’t miss. Small visitor center but helpful staff gave great recommendations based on how long you had to visit. There is a steep trail to the top of the bluff but then the trail is relatively flat. It was rainy the day we were there but the trail is well maintained and wasn’t slick. The mound shapes are a little hard to visualize as they are fairly shallow but a few of them are impressive. The trail is like taking a trip back in time and there are several overlooks of the Mississippi River.

Nice area for hiking

Nice area for hiking. Trail is well maintained. A little hard to see some of the mounds while on the trail due to their size, but the trail was pretty. The rangers were very helpful, and warned us that the mosquitoes were really bad that day. Nice overlooks.

Reasonable hikes.

The rangers were very helpful with the junior ranger book and trail suggestions. Due to our 4 year old we decided on a 2 mile round trip option. We saw mounds and beautiful views of the river. The trail was uneven at parts on the uphill. Otherwise the trail was well mulched.
