This was a quiet place to get away from the activity of the main drag. Many of the headstones are from the soldiers that died during the battle at Gettysburg. One of the famous ladies resting here is Jennie Wade, the only civilian killed during the three-day battle. She has a perpetual flag at her resting site. One of only two ladies so memorialized in the USA. The other is Betsy Ross. Both of these ladies are buried in PA. The care takers wife and her father buried over 90 Union soldiers following the battle because no one else was available to assist. There was a war going on.

Walking under the archway that stood during the battles is unforgettable. Made a point of visiting the plot of Jennie Wade and Jack Skelly, after visiting the Jennie Wade house almost across the street. Great experience!

A cemetery for the citizens of Gettysburg, it became directly involved in the battle. The arches were hit with artillery and damaged. President Lincoln is believed to have made his famous Gettysburg Address here. A peaceful place to wonder, there are Civil War soldiers buried here as well as the adjacent National Cemetery and is part of Battlefield Park. A couple famous people buried here is Jennie Wade, the only civilian killed in the battle, as well as James Getty, the "founder" of Gettysburg.

We are not in the habit of visiting cemeteries, but this one carries so much history it was worth a respectful stop. The gatehouse itself is featured in so many Gettysburg photos of the day it is worth attention. We then slowly drove to where Lincoln is thought to have REALLY given the Gettysburg Address. The graves in the area and even the fence have their own histories not to be missed. Then there is the grave of Jenny Wade back towards the entrance. Looking over these grounds and knowing that they were literally part of the battle (in some cases) gives you an even deeper appreciation for what took place in this town.

We enjoy visiting cemeteries, as you can learn so much from older headstones. Evergreen Cemetery did not disappoint. Got a map that was hanging on the door of the business office. We spent a lot of time wandering and reading. A guide pointed out the approximate place they believe Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. So historical!

This is the final resting place of Jenny Wade, the only civilian killed in the battle of Gettysburg. Her grave is easy to find, it has an American flag flying constantly. The only other woman with this honor is Betsy Ross.

We only drove through this cemetery, but could easily have spent the entire day wandering among the graves. Really beautiful location.

Stayed at the Comfort Suites right next to this cemetery. On the other side of the cemetery, Evergreen shares a fence with the National Cemetery. The Evergreen website claims to contain the precise spot where Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg address. It was interesting to find that spot and view the headstones of many local pioneers of the area, as well as some of the Union soldiers who fell in the battle there. The statue here erected to the memory of Elizabeth Masser Thorn is a fascinating story

Evergreen Cemetery the is one of the three historic cemeteries in the Gettysburg National Military Park. The other twos are Gettysburg National Military Park and Soldiers' National Cemetery. The historic significant of this cemetery (based on the information), is where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "Gettysburg Address"
