Perfect for a winter day in Baltimore. My husband and I were in Baltimore for the weekend and this was a beautiful building to wander around.

After millions of dollars and amazing work from historical architects and artisans, the Central Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library is open for inspection. The library was built during the Depression as a depository for a growing library in downtown Baltimore. Over the years, a beautiful glass ceiling in the central hall was covered over, ornate carved and decorated areas were painted, ugly fluorescent lighting replaced stunning pendant light fixtures and any number of other indignities cheapened a beautiful building and made it into a dark and dingy place frequented by the homeless. Well, no more. The Library in all its glory is back!
We were treated to a tour of the place by Wesley Wilson who has been a fixture (no pun intended) at Pratt for over 50 years and he presented it to us with great love and enthusiasm. The building itself is now again glorious and deserves a visit for that reason alone but, in addition, the facility offers so much more. Besides borrowing books, no longer with penalties, visitors can borrow DVD's and videos, search for genealogical information, visit the impressive E. A. Poe and H. L. Menkin rooms, examine a new hands-on facility where students can learn entrepreneurial skills like sewing and 3D prining and, much, much more. It's a wonderful place worthy of your time.

We were in Baltimore on a winter day killing time until are night flight. We decided to go to the library to spend a few hours. The facility is a great piece of architecture. The interior lay out is very good. We spend time in the periodiclas room which was well laid out and stocked. The staff is exceptionally friendly.
One down note, is that if you need to use the rest rooms use the ones on the second floor if you can.

This is a beautiful old building which has recently undergone restoration. All the scaffolding is down from the interior and the great hall is restored to glory. When the ceiling was being prepared for repainting it was discovered to have beautiful artwork underneath several layers of old, chipped & peeling paint. The old artwork was restored to glory and glorious it is. The beamed ceiling is beautiful. throughout all the rooms. In the great hall, there is not only the ceiling to marvel at but also the high borders which are equally beautiful. The large table that was in the center of the great hall has been removed so the full immenseness of the room can be felt. Unfortunately, no additional display shelves were able to be added so much of the inventory of spectacular books is in storage. A librarian can get these books for you if you find an interesting one in the digital card catalog. Restrooms have also been upgraded but are still in the very back right hallway so it's a long treck. There are a large number of audio and video CD's, and a computer lab (also in the back). There are not enough comfortable seats at the too few tables. There are not any comfortable groupings of chairs where you can sit and read that I could find and there are way too few electrical outlets. A visit just to see the interior will take 30-60 minutes depending on how thoroughly you examine the artwork. If you are reading or doing research, you will spend a longer period of time.

At this point there’s a lot of construction going on but it’s still open. The only disappointment was the Poe Room was not open. The staff is super friendly.

Un lugar muy valioso por su coleccion de libros. Es un lugar antiguo con mucha historia y una arquitectura hermosa. Un poco conocida por los habitantes locales, pero definitivamente recomendable para turistas extranjeros a quienes les interese esta clase de lugares.

There is nothing that compares to walking into a building that is as old as Pratt Library and smelling the history!. Man, it grabs you with a scent that you will never forget. I have been here 50 times since I was a kid and it never changes. The building itself is coll to wander but the resources are what you would expect for a large, traditional library. Growing up in the suburbs of Baltimore, I never had this experience in a local county library. They are cold and institutional, geared to children and suburban moms. The Pratt Library is a reflection of the past. When there, imagine the people who may have passed through those doors.
