Walk through Baltimore History
2020年9月 • 好友
We found graves of Baltimore's famous like Johns Hopkins, Enoch Pratt, Elijah Bond of Ouija Board fame, and Aubrey Bodine, photographer. The gates are locked, so visits are by appointment. A useful map is provided and one can drive around most of the Cemetery or park and take well maintained footpaths. We saw grave stones dating back to 1810, though there may be older ones. There is a wide variety of funerary architecture. While one can see the city over the high stone walks, one generally feels enclosed in another world.

Really, this cemetery is worth a visit
2019年5月
Historic Greenmount Cemetery is worth seeing both because of the beauty of the setting and the art and architecture contained therein, but also because it is the final resting place of many well-known Baltimore and national figures including John Wilkes Booth, Johns Hopkins, and Enoch Pratt. Stop by the office located in the Gothic Revival Gateway building and you can get a map showing the location of the most famous monuments in the cemetery. On a hot summer day in Baltimore, spending a little time in the cool shade can give a pleasant hour and a little history lesson. You can drive close to most of the monuments.

Beautiful and interesting

We initially went to find this headstone that belonged to Elijah Bond but we discovered other interesting people buried here as well. John Wilkes Booth, Johns Hopkins, Sydney Lanier, Betsy Patterson (Napoleon Bonaparte’s sister-in-law). Stop at the gate to check in the office and they will help you locate people you might be looking for.

This cemetery holds the remains of many famous Baltimore people. I don't want to be incorrect so I wont offer any names. But a google search will tell you. Tours available.

Worth the art

Worth a stop to look for the angels. There's a dozen of them and some are truly great works of art. Bonus if your name is Einstein or any other German or Jewish ancestry.

You can drive through it but definitely stop throughout to walk around and look at the old graves. Elijah Bonds grave is really cool. Definitely bring a penny to put on John WIlks Booth unmarked grave!

Great Quick Stop

If you’re a fan of Civil War history, this place is a must see. I’m not from the area, and be advised it is not in a great part of town. You can grab a map at the office when you come into the cemetery. Also a heads up the entrance gate is VERY narrow and cobblestone so be prepared. Once inside it’s like you’ve been transported to a classic cemetery with beautiful architecture throughout. If you’re pressed for time and are going for the main attraction ofJohn Wilkes Booth, hang a quick right when you first get through the entrance and then a left. You’ll pass the giant chapel on your left until you come to a small mausoleum, just park there and walk straight and you’ll hit the Booth family plot. The caretakers are all really helpful to if you get lost but the plot is very close to the entrance. Make sure to leave a penny on the headstone. There are also other notable Civil War figures and the inventor of the ouija board are buried here so there is a lot more to see if you’re comfortable in the area.

Amazing Baltimore history

As a historian and serving Soldier, I’m glad to have spent a couple hours here on Veterans Day. Though it is no military cemetery, it is no ordinary graveyard. Green Mount has great architecture and a substantial history to it. The office provided a map, and will help look up grave sites for family history research as well as for finding the notable’s grave sites. Check online before you go as the office closes early on Saturdays and the place is closed on Sundays (except Mother’s Day). Drive into the cemetery through the gate and park inside.

One Of My Favorite Stops

Greenmount Cemetery is in a very shady & run down part of town. With that being said, the cemetery seems to do a great job with security. When you first enter the grounds it is required that you first go into the office to check in. They gave me a map of the grounds and pointed me towards the grave I was there to see, that of John Wilkes Booth. The cemetery was easy to navigate on foot and I felt completely safe walking around the grounds. The Booth grave is unmarked with pennies that people have left on top of it (implying that Honest Abe has gotten the last word!) Although I left shortly after viewing his site, there are many other notable graves in this cemetery. If you are a history buff I would definitely recommed stopping in to at least see the John Wilkes Booth grave. It is one of the really neat, unknown, out of the way sights in the city that takes you away from the hustle, while also being really worth while.

Peaceful walk through history
2017年7月
We love cemeteries and the tales they can tell. Greenmount is the resting place for famous, infamous, statesmen, business people, and citizens of all stripes. Armed with a map from the office we set out to find the graves of those who interested us. The map was helpful but a bit confusing so we spent a lot of time looking. That was fine except we had no information on the dozens of graves that caught our attention.

It is a well-kept cemetery and we spoke to a pair of employees who clearly loved their jobs. We are going to do a little more research and will return.
