A Real Look at Early Irish in Baltimore

This off-the-beaten-path museum is a true gem in our City. Whether you have Irish ancestors or not, you will learn something new and truly appreciate the hardships that immigrants overcame in the 19th Century. It's very small - 3 tiny houses - But the knowledgeable and helpful staff fill every room with a great deal of information. Be on the lookout for special events, such as the neighborhood tour.

This is a small, intimate museum consisting of two row houses side by side. The director/curator/docent is a nice guy who goes out of his way to be helpful. Not fancy but interesting just the same. It seems that is of more interest to locals than out of Towner's, but if you are of Irish decent or interested in Irish immigration, go.

Know the Irish Contribution and What They Endured

This was one of the best things we did in Baltimore. It makes real the immense contributions and suffering the Irish experienced working on the railroads and living in harsh times. Much of the homes contain original construction material unlike many restored historical sites. Walk up the same stairs the Irish rail workers walked. Stand in their tiny rooms and imagine raising seven kids there. See their Catholic shrines. Great experience.
