While driving thru Bolton Hill, my husband and I noticed Blue Plaques on some of the houses. We were curious to find out what they represented. Lo and behold, Baltimore Heritage answered our questions in one of their Five Minute History Episodes they have been doing since the Coronavirus came to Baltimore. The Blue Plaque program originated in the United Kingdom in an effort to link a location with a famous person. It was launched in 1866 in London. Bolton Hill decided to honor the houses where famous past residents once lived. Some notable blue plaque honorees include F. Scott Fitzgerald, President Woodrow Wilson, and the Cone Sisters. We stopped and took a photo of the plaque that honored Curt Richter, PH.D and Garry Moore. We found it most curious that they did not list Garry Moore’s real name, which was Thomas Garrison Morfit, III. Spend some time driving around Bolton Hill and see how many Blue Plaques you can find.

Bolton Hill is one of the best neighborhoods of Baltimore.
It has wonderful homes and great people living in it.
The homes are really large and there are quite a few historic people who lived in this neighborhood. A number of the homes have plaques on them showing which historical figure lived in the neighborhood. Since many of the homes are close to Pennsylvania Train station on Charles Street, quite a few commuters to Washington D. C. also live in Bolton Hill.
An interesting fact also is that the hit show House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey was and is filmed mostly in the Bolton Hill neighborhood. Though House of Cards is supposed to be set in Washington, quite a few of the scenes were filmed on Park Avenue in the Bolton Hill neighborhood.
I have included a few videos from YouTube of the Bolton Hill neighborhood as well as the
Train station right near Bolton Hill:

A Baltimore native, I have to say that my fifteen years living in Bolton Hill were the best in my life -- as far as neighborhoods are concerned. Petty crime and the occasional pan-handler: What large city doesn't have those? This is the kind of neighborhood that creates opportunities that encourage neighbors to know each other and become friends for YEARS.
They kick-off Spring with a parade down our streets -- MICA students make unbelievably-creative, colorful costumes and local elementary schools provide the marching band. Rev. Martha has established The Memorial Players to give several free musical productions at Memorial Episcopal Church, featuring mostly neighborhood residents -- including professional lighting techs, mini live orchestra, costume makers, etc. Running into the same people at our local businesses -- B's Bistro for Sunday Brunch, getting your morning coffee (or a late lunch) at On the Hill, the Mayberry-esque Best Hardware -- makes it almost impossible not to make friends with your neighbors. For sixty years the Festival on the Hill in October brings a huge block party, complete with a stage for local talent performances, booths selling wares for charity (I like the used books booth) -- and tons of food -- to make for a simple, great day right outside your door. And let's not forget ArtScape in July and the Christmas Carolers singing the classics as they stop along your street each December.
If you don't mind walking a few blocks, take in a free exhibit at one of three spaces at MICA for every-changing gallery exhibits that you simply won't find anywhere else. Just walk over to the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall to take in a wide variety of concerts and programs. It's not uncommon for several neighbors to walk over there together -- I've done it, and it makes for great conversation after the event on the way back home.
Best of all, it's the kind of neighborhood where you get greeted by name by your neighbors and their kids. Lots of us invite each other into our apartments and homes for impromptu gatherings: great memories.
I recently moved to the crime-free, sterile burbs with large, manicured lawns littered with "No Trespassing" and "Keep Off My Property!" signs, but boy do I wish I was back in Bolton Hill. Based on the frequency of former neighbors coming back for a visit because they were "just passing through" I know that I'm not the only one.

Lived in Bolton Hill 10+ years ago. Nice to walk around the square, good local restaurant, but not too great to watch a burglar climb over my fence in back and walk to my back window to break in. Good thing the cops responded quickly and the perp was caught.

I love Bolton Hill but had to rate it poor. It is a beautiful area full of restored Victorian row homes. It is also sadly infested with crime. In my time living there my car was broken into and just about every car in the area had a window broken out. There were armed robberies and even rapes.
If you rent in Bolton Hill be prepared to put up with MICA students throwing all night parties. The apartments are way over priced.Be very sure you have a valid parking permit or the meter maids and city will make your life an endless hell.
