A Rare Treasure

Blackbeard Island is one of those rare natural places that is worth the effort to visit. I have been there for one of the organized hunts to control the deer and hog population. We had a fantastic time.

Visit if you ever get the opportunity

Recently visited on a guided tour by US fish & Wildlife Service employees, Chuck Hayes and Nancy Hickey. Our trip was organised by the environmental charity, One Hundred Miles, whose aim is to raise awareness of the importance and beauty of Coastal Georgia.

Accessible only by boat, much of the island is a designated wilderness. The beach is unspoilt and stunning with a ‘boneyard’ area to rival any on this wonderful coast.

We had the additional pleasure of spotting a bald eagle, two great horned owls and four dolphins plus learnt so much about the history of the island, it’s ecological importance and the steps taken to protect and enhance the same.

If you ever get a chance to visit - Just do it!!

Great day shelling

2015年7月

We chartered a boat that picked us up at our rental homes dock. It was a very nice and peaceful island. Great for shelling, we found so many horseshoe crabs, sand dollars, whelk, and various other shell. Really enjoyed having the island all to our selves.

We have been going several years to Blackbeard Island with our sailing club. It is absolutely one of our most favorite places.

30 years of Blackbeard Island visits.

Blackbeard is a pristine island in an almost natural state, I have been visiting the island for the bow hunts and fishing for many years and it is always an inspiration to everyone who visits. The island is very primitive and the beach usually never has a human foot print. Shells galore and drift wood. A visit requires a boat trip which can be expensive but well worth is for the day. Carry what you need and bring out anything which must be discarded.

Beautiful....

My family has been going to this area for years saltwater fishing. Blackbeard Island is one of our favorite destinations. Not only is the fishing wonderful around the island, especially in the area between Blackbeard and Sapelo islands, but the beach on Blackbeard is gorgeous! From the south end where there is a huge sand spit at low tide to the boneyard and quarantine station on the sound the beach seems never ending. You can pull your boat up and anchor in the creek and walk over the dunes to the beach. There are also trails on the island where you can see ancient sand dunes and foundations from old plantation houses. No one lives on the island so if you need help there is a DNR station on the back side of the island on the creek.
