If you enjoy modern art, this museum is a must. We were pleasantly surprised at the high quality exhibitions and beautifully arranged space. Will be sure to visit again

It's a perfect thing to do if the weather is not great. Loved having the students around to help understand the art. Some of the art took some imagination. Really enjoyed the outdoor displays.

Wonderful museum. The student docents were knowledgeable and helpful and very well trained. Great exhibits. More than just paintings and sculptures.

Unique, very intriguing art installations in multiple galleries … staffed entirely by SCAD students; the students were gracious, knowledgeable, and personable … the student docents really enjoy what they are doing AND enjoy helping visitors to enjoy the museum, too. Quite the bargain at $10 per person ($8 for those 60 years & older). For those who care, there is a very small snack bar to purchase a canned/bottled beverage or packaged light snack … and a few tables to sit. They also have a small selection of SCAD items to purchase.

I think they should focus more about the actual art, not advertise about the school so much, I don’t have kids so it didn’t make sense how much they promoted the college ?

There was no charge since they were renovating several of the galleries. We did enjoy the few that were open though. Particularly intriguing were the wigs in the entrance area for drag queens. The jewelry exhibit was quite interesting for the different materials used and the designs of the rings.

I'm an old school art lover (think Da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo) so modern art isn't my style but I'm always looking for something new and beautiful to challenge my artistic viewpoint. Part of the museum was under renovation and reconstruction so the fee was waived when I visited. Yay! I have to admit, some of the exhibits were fascinating, made me stop, think and look hard and long at some of the canvases. There were plenty of volunteer staff available to answer any questions you may have. As I was leaving, a staff employee offered me a free ticket to return when the museum was up and running normally again. Thanks!

Your enjoyment of this museum will depend largely on your taste in 'art'. The more you like modern art, the more you are apt to enjoy this.

First tip: when you face the museum (on MLK Blvd.) the entrance is actually about a block down the street to the right of the museum.

When you enter you are greeted by one or more SCAD student volunteers who give you a quick verbal overview of the museum. They do not let you take drinks / bottled water into the galleries. We had to check a bottle of water, through we got it back later. They initially asked to check the backpack, but we didn't want to do that, so the compromise was the water.

Admission is free, which is a major plus.

Another thing that I personally did not like here was the staffing. Nothing against the students - they were stationed 1 or 2 per gallery with tablets and seemed poised to answer any question you might have. But to me, part of the enjoyment of an art gallery is not interacting with people (other than perhaps the party I came with) - I get to browse and read descriptions of pieces that interest me. Here, the vibe was more like a store where there are too many clerks who are too interested in asking if you need assistance... Again, I understand that this is probably some volunteer-for-credit thing at the school, and I salute the students for being ready and willing to assist, but it isn't my thing.

As for the art, it was almost all modern. Some things were more interesting than others (a table with knife blades above and the handles carved to look like a skyline; a set of paper and stick lanterns is a huge display; a long table full of grass / sod with a small tree in the middle and a tablet playing a video at one end; etc.). It wasn't really the sort of art I'm that interested in.

YMMV, but I wasn't that taken with this museum; I'm glad it was free, though.

Thanks for visiting us at the SCAD Museum of Art! We strive to bring you the best in contemporary art and artists. You must have visited us while we were changing out a number of our shows, which is why admission was complimentary. We hope to see you back here after mid-Setember when all of our galleries will have new artists to showcase! The Docents are, in fact, all SCAD students and enjoy talking about the art with guests or providing more context when needed. That is what sets us apart from most museums. Thanks for your detailed review!

Visits to see the exhibitions at the SCAD never fails to provide a feast for the senses and the mind. The student docents are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the artists and the meaning of the works. The SCAD Beach is a super fun spot to spend some time to catch some rays after walking through the museum!

The student and alumni exhibits stretched my imagination in ways I've not experienced at other art museums. I thoroughly enjoyed! I admit I was confused though, at why poured resin projects were placed on the floor in front of pieces on the wall and then expected not to be stepped on.

Thanks for visiting us at the SCAD Museum of Art and happy you had a chance to see our Alumni Gallery as well! You must be referring to Paulina Olowska's exhibit, Mainly for Women. She used the resin as a part of her installation embedded with pieces of the Mainly for Women book. Glad you enjoyed the shows!
