We hadn’t intended to visit Fort Buford, but as it was included in the price of our visit to the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Visitor Center (see separate review), we ventured down the road, and are we glad that we did. For the first 10 minutes or so we walked around the facility alone, but then an extremely knowledgeable guide appeared and let us into the officers quarters, where he comprehensively and thoroughly (but not pretentiously) explained the fort’s history and what its significance was. We stayed well over an hour, and learned a lot. In fact, while we expected to like Fort Union better (see separate review), we found this to be a hidden gem, worth a visit.

Do not miss the site where Sitting Bull surrendered his rifle to the US Army. Guides are friendly and well-informed, and museum dedicated to the life of Sitting Bull and the Fort is one of the finest I've ever seen.

Good trip. We arrived at approximately 12:30 pm and made our way towards the entrance of the main building. There were informational plaques located throughout the fort, that provided information on the various buildings that were once located inside. There was also a boardwalk type trail that brought you to all of the buildings in the fort. The field officers quarters housed the main museum in the fort. There were several rooms that contained numerous amounts of artifacts, along with informational plaques that detailed what life was like on the fort. I found the plaques to be very interesting! There was also a tour guide on site, who gave me a guided tour of the infantry barracks, dining/recreation room, and kitchen. The guide did a great job explaining what went on in each room. Behind the two main buildings were the power magazine storage building, guardhouse and guard building. Each building allowed you to go inside and see the different artifacts inside. Be aware- there are a lot of bugs on the trail! There was also a trail located across from the fort, that contained some additional plaques.
Tip: I recommend spending 3 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

This is a pioneer age military fort that at one point had I believe six calvary units living here. It became like a small town. Built in 1866 is became a major supply depot for military field operations. It protected overland and river routes. The Missouri and Yellowstone rivers were close by. Some original buildings still stand. Spencer, a volunteer, took us around and explained many things to us.
Most important was being in the same room where Sitting Bull surrendered in 1881. He gave his rifle to his son, who then gave it to the forts commander.

A very interesting historical site. So glad that we made the stop. The museum and gift shop up the road was also a lot of fun. Mr. Garcia was a wealth of knowledge as he explained the artifacts and their history. Ms. Crossland was a delight as well and full of knowledge.

We stopped at Fort Buford, Fort Union, and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Center in an afternoon. Fort Buford was the most interesting and historical of the three. Due to COVID, you must stop first at the confluence center to get an admission ticket. The Fort Buford guided tour takes you through two buildings on site. You can be inside the room where Sitting Bull surrendered in 1881. The cemetery was very interesting. The grave markers list the manner of death. It was fascinating to see the historical terms used for various diseases. It is a small cemetery very well maintained, definitely would recommend taking the time to walk through it.

My husband, a friend and I went to Fort Buford on a Monday in late August. We took a 45 minute guided tour of the fort. $5 for adults. We had two guides at two different times. Both were friendly and knowledgeable. You cannot tour the inside of the buildings without a tour. On the tour, we saw the barracks, officers’ quarters, the room where Sitting Bull surrendered, a small museum and short movie. The visitor’s center has a small store, plenty of parking and nice restrooms. The influence of the Yellowstone river and Missouri River can be seen best from the boat ramp that is a few blocks from the visitor’s center. There were a few picnic tables near the ramp. Fort Union Trading Post is only 4 miles from Fort Buford. I recommend both.

The army built the fort at the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers...principally to protect settlers moving westward and river boats bringing in supplies. They have a museum in an original building, and have reconstructured an enlisted men's quarters and kitchen nearby. The site is important as it was where many of the important chiefs were kept after their surrender, including Sitting Bull.

Three buildings. Charged $5 for this and confluence building. I guess it's worth the historic significance

We happened across Ft Buford while looking for Fort Union which is only a few miles down the road. There really wasn't much here for me. It formed part of the River Confluence interpretive center site. Admission got you in both places.
There was literally no one there but us and the attendant. Mid day on a Saturday? In the summer? They would probably get more visitors if they lowered their rates. Nice clean rest rooms and good parking lot. Thanks for reading and if you found something useful in here, please click helpful below. Godspeed!

The old Fort Buford is in that area and a superb spot to explore - especially the cemetery - lots of old graves there with unique documentation on the headstones - i.e., reasons for demise like murdered by accident, etc.
