Fairsted!
2019年9月
We had the opportunity in September to tour this excellent home and studio of one of the finest landscape architects in the history of the United States.
We arrived in Brookline early and were placed on the first tour. We first watched a nice video of Olmstead and his house Fairsted and wandered through several rooms of the original mansion built in 1810 and purchased by Olmstead in 1883.
Our tour of the building and grounds was led by our docent, Lisa. She took us on about an hour tour of the working areas of the buildings where Olmstead and his associates designed many of the famous parks and landscapes. There is a vault where we saw the 138,000 original actual plans and 60,000 photos for plans for which the firm was contracted or planned to build. Lisa also led us through the grounds which were also designed by Olmstead.
It was an excellent experience, and one which we very highly recommend.

WONDERFUL, federally-run, historic site! Matthew was a great tour guide and my daughter and I learned a lot about this great man and what his legacy has acomplished.

Gorgeous grounds, fascinating man
2019年9月
My son had printed the Junior Ranger booklet for this historic site before we left on this trip so we stopped by to turn it in. It was only supposed to be a short visit but we found the grounds to be gorgeous, and learned about the history of public gardens and parks in the US and about Frederick Law Olmsted. What an incredible man who has influenced so many of the parks in every state, even in our own state of Washington.

Free parking. Quiet neighborhood, in the same town as the JFK National Historic Site.

Beautiful, 'Natural' Gardens

We were fortunate enough to be in town for the 'open house', where staff was available to provide background to all that there was to see. What a gifted and remarkable man he was!

Incredible Historical Site...
2018年11月 • 独自旅游
Visited in early November, when leaves were at prime in Brookline. It was absolutely lovely, walking from the bus to the FLO site. A bit of a brisk walk, yet a beautiful sunny day. I arrived a little before opening time, and the staff member let me in right away where it was much warmer. I walked through the house, wandering from room to room through the family's home. The library in front was beautiful, as were the other areas. It felt like being in the presence of greatness - this family so masterful in designing green spaces in Boston areas and further afield. There was a short documentary film in the dining area before the tour began. The tour took us through the business offices that were added onto the house for 60 staff members. There were tables, tools, equipment, and fantastic explanations of treasures it held. I'm very thankful the NPS exists, to preserve these historically significant places for future generations to learn from and truly appreciate their resonance.

Nice historic site

If you like architecture, landscaping, and history of public parks in the US you are going to love this location. The library is a very nice place to relax and read historical materials. Exhibits are interesting but the tour of the studio is most interesting. If you like landscaping and plants then also take the grounds tour.

Facinating, Quick Tour
2018年9月 • 夫妻情侣
Wow!
Many of us know about Olmstead and how he invented American landscape architecture and designed Central Park, and many (MANY) other parks and Universities.

This ~45 minute tour was loaded with interesting information on Olmstead, his family, and the firm that was so instrumental in shaping american landscape architecture, parks, university campuses, etc.

This location in Brookline was key for the firms work and you learn about how they invented a new kind of firm and leveraged so much cutting edge technology for the time. You see the tools of the trade and are walked through the process.

Beautiful location and a great hidden gem. Easy parking.

Probably not the best for younger kids, but they could play on the grounds.

Highly recommended. Free.

Worth a Visit
2018年6月 • 夫妻情侣
This is the house that Olmsted purchased when he was in his early 60s and added onto it to make it his office as well. Took the guided tour and it was interesting to learn about the additions as well as the park making business. Definitely worth a visit.

A slice of history
2018年5月 • 夫妻情侣
We visited before the building was open to visitors, but were able to get two brochures with information on the site and on Olmsted. Parking lot is small. A very flowery explanation of the outdoor area, offering insight as to Olmsted's intent. It made us want to come back when we could see the displays inside.

Quick fun outing
2018年3月
Both adults and children, though not little ones, would enjoy this site. It is interesting to learn the process of how he made he blueprints and the myriad of work he did in Boston and New York. Also, if your are a local, he did a lot of private landscape design in the Brookline area and one can look up the properties that he planned. Call ahead for visiting times as they are not open long hours or every day. I would say it is about an hours visit.
