We live in the Chicago area and while we love going to the national parks, we never really gave this place much thought even though it’s just two hours away as I assumed it was just mostly beaches and I’m not that much into those. But since we had our America the Beautiful pass, we gave it a shot and it was a pleasant surprise. Make sure you take the time to first visit the visitor center and watch the introduction video. While it’s slightly long, it’s still highly informative and shows this place has a lot else going for it, such is it’s the fourth most biodiverse national park. It’s an awesome place if you study flowers or birds.
Unless you are planning to spend a day at the beach, you can hit the highlights in a day, but we spent two and took our time. We went on a Saturday in September and the temperatures were in the 70’s so there was a fair number of people at the beach. We visited two of them, West Beach, which is the biggest and has a huge parking lot. I’m not sure why, but they have already shut down the showers and changing area and as long as it’s still semi-warm it should remain open. We also went to Porter Beach and that’s right next to the Dunes State Park (which you have to pay for separately but still has a nice beach and great restaurant). Parking at Porter Beach is pretty limited, and we barely got a parking spot, even though it was off-season. So, if you come in the summer, you had better arrive early and if you are not into hitting the beach, you would be better off visiting in any other season of the year.
From a hiking standpoint, I would recommend the Calumet Dunes, the Portage Lakefront, Bailly Homestead, and the Dune Succession. The last one is a large staircase and while they say it’s 250, it’s closer to 500 if you take it all the way to the beach one-way. The Portage Lakefront is really nice and one quirk with this park is that it shares a boundary with the steel mill and the signage for the National Park is pretty small so it’s easy to miss if you are not looking for it. The park ranger gave the tip of just putting the Porter Lakefront in our maps application and it then worked fine.
Since the park is a little spread out, just pay attention to the signs (and not all of them have been changed to the National Park). There are also no gate entrances so while it’s not right, I’m sure there are a decent number of people who visit and just don’t pay and see if they can get away with it. The Century of Progress Homes was neat to look at, but keep in mind that you can’t go inside since people are living in them. The Tropical House is the most famous one and since it’s pink, it gets extra attention with the success of the Barbie movie.
My daughter did the junior ranger program and compared it to the other national parks, this was fairly involved so it took some time to complete, which was fine. Another unique quirk is unlike most other national parks, dogs are allowed in most places and in fact have a cute bark ranger activity that you can do.
So, while this place will never get the attention of the better-known parks, it’s still worth a trip.

ACTUALLY VISITED AUGUST 2019. However, my review was sitting in DRAFTS rather than being posted. My mistake, I guess, but since I took the time to write a review after visiting, I wanted to post it anyway. Here is what I wrote at the time of my visit:
We only had a short time to visit Indiana Dunes National Park. This is a unique national park being that it is a lakeshore and its borders go out into the water! We visited one of the Visitor Centers to see the films and also spent time walking the Dune of Succession Trail and watching the people swimming in Lake Michigan. If you walk this trail, there are many, many stairs either direction you walk around the loop. You have stairs to climb and stairs to descend either way you go around this loop. Part of it is in the shade, though. We are senior travelers and made the trail fine. They do say it is strenuous because of all the stairs. Part of the trail is a good boardwalk and part is in the sand that slows your pace. Lake Michigan is beautiful and we were able to see the Chicago skyline in the distance from the trail as well as from the West Beachfront along the trail we walked. We paid $6 entry and the ANNUAL National Park pass did not work. Some passes do ...check the website since I cannot remember exactly what the ranger said. We visited on a summer Friday mid-afternoon and had no trouble with parking at the West Beach near the trail we walked. Nice place to visit ...Lake Michigan is beautiful!

Was hoping to camp in the area and no spaces available but wanted to drive up and see the Lake / Lighthouse. When we drove in there was no one taking a fee which was thankful as we were planning to only be there about 30 mins. Walked out to see the LH and water and a few of the Dunes before heading into Michigan City for lunch. Was surprised it was a National Park as did not have the care many of the parks typically do.

This is an incredible way to spend a day. It is a clean, well-maintained Beach. Our visit today helped me maintain my faith in the kindness of strangers. While pulling our wagon across the beach to a friend's sun shelter her dog ran across the beach in an effort to attack our three dogs. There were immediately about 5 men hauling her off them! Without them, my other friend would have been injured and our pups would have been severely injured. Thank You wholeheartedly for your kindness, gentlemen! If you know them please share out heartfelt thanks with them!!!

This should not be a National Park. It's a nice place for a walk or a day at the beach. Nice view of an industrial plant. Park is broken up in a couple of parts with separate entrances. We arrived at 6:00 PM on Monday August 21st and needed to pay $25 to enter. Told the ranger we were only going in for an hour and I have a Senior Life pass but did not have it, but I did have a picture of both sides of it on my phone and my license. Ranger would not accept it, so we paid the $25. Then when we left at 7:00 the ranger was gone and people were driving in free. I feel ripped off!

For a national park, this was unimpressive. The best part we saw was the 1933 World's Fair homes. The worst part was the fact that this part just is not up to the natural beauty we have seen at so many other national parks. It is scattered through many different areas. Some of the protected areas just don't seem that special: an old farm, a fur trapper's cabin/house, and some beaches. It used to be a national lakeshore, which honestly seems much more appropriate than national park designation. The park film is basically a 30 minute commercial for stuff you can do in the park (fishing, boating, beach, hiking, cross country skiing, birding, etc) with minimal information about the dune's formation or history. I can understand the desire to protect a very diverse ecological environment, but I really don't understand why this became a national park when most of it was already protected by its state park designation and/or previous national seashore designation. The staff at the Paul H. Douglas Center were great and very helpful. A few animals can be viewed there. This is currently on a road that is completely torn up for construction, but there are signs directing you to a parking area. The main visitor center in Porter, IN is not as helpful. A few random exhibits, the previously mentioned skippable park movie, and a large gift shop are there. Honestly, the main reason we went was to get the Junior Ranger badge for the kids. This involved watching the park movie, visiting both visitor's centers, seeing a beach, hiking the Dunes Succession trail (which is not clearly marked for the start at all...), visiting the farm, visiting the fur trapper cabin/house, and answering a few other questions. So we did spend like 4 hours "in" the park trying to accomplish all of that. I have zero plans to revisit this park, because there just is not much there in terms of natural beauty.

We have learned to keep away from Indiana Dunes on really warm days and especially long weekends. Getting a parking could be very tough with lines as long as 2hours. The park can get better by giving an ability to prepay for the parking and entrance passes instead of having to wait at the lines. The staff can also be faster by collecting the parking and entrance fees with efficient processes.
It is sad to see more than 100 cars waiting in lines for hours to get into the parking lot for more than 2hours on an extremely warm day and on long weekends.

The Park seems like a nice place if you want to swim and use the beaches. It’s pretty disappointing as a National Park, however.
Indiana Dunes is not a traditional self-contained National Park. It consists of a large number different sections scattered along Lake Michigan and nearby. (Similar to Cuyahoga Valley and Acadia National Parks). You drive along public roads. The area itself is a mixed bag - a large steel mill, residential housing, small businesses - and is not very scenic. There is also an Indiana Dunes state park nearby.
We initially stopped at the Visitor’s Center. The people there were very helpful and gave us a good overview of the Park.
The dunes were fairly interesting and they have a variety of hiking trails. Some of the trails consist of sand which makes for slow hiking.
They have several different beaches. We stopped at West Beach which is very popular. They have a nice bathhouse with a small restaurant, indoor bathrooms and water fountains for filling water bottles.
Signage was horrible, especially for a National Park. We missed one sight because the turnoff wasn’t marked. We tried to hike the Loop 1 trail at West Beach in reverse but couldn’t because of the lack of signs. I have never been to a National Park with such lousy signage. It was really frustrating, particularly since it wouldn’t take much money to correct the problem.
If you’re in the area it’s with a stop, especially if you want to use the beaches. I don’t recommend going out of your way for it, though.

I highly recommend checking out the visitors center before venturing out to the parks. The rangers and staff will provide you with a map and information about both national and state parks. Trying to figure it out on your own can be a little confusing.
The national park requires you to pay to park. If you plan on going more than one day. I suggest a $25 seven day pass.
Kemil Beach requires a short walk from the parking lot to the sand.
Dunbar Beach has limited parking that is beachfront. There are stairs, or you can climb down the rocks to the beach. This area is clean and was not crowded. ( I went on a Tuesday) The sand can get very hot and there are rocks. Water shoes may work best for some. Dogs on leashes are welcome. No lifeguards.
West Beach is one of the popular beaches with a decent amount of parking. With a boardwalk, life guards, and it's accessible. West Beach also has the West Beach trail. With a 250+ stair climb for view of Lake Michigan and Chicago. The trail was a little bit of a challenge but worth it.
Lastly, keep in mind parking anywhere near Indiana Dunes comes with a price. Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana Dunes State Park, Washington Park, and Washington Park Zoo all require different parking passes.

Much to see. Ice only saw part of it. The Dunes are large and a nice beach. Enjoyed the walk up the many steps and a walk on the beach.

There are things to do at the water and along the beach. In addition the Progress of Century Homes along the shore is good to see as well as the Mt Baldy. With driving you can easily do all this within 2 hours. We hiked most of the trails and were able to do everything within 5 hours.

We plan to spend 4 hours in the park in June 2020.. We have already decided to do the 3 dunes challenge and bicycle for the rest of the time. Want to avoid crowds and beaches due to Covid-19. Please suggest: 1) ideal parking lot 2) paved biking trails. Thank you.

My partner and I are looking for a beach to take our boys (ages 8 and 10) to later this summer, and looking through pictures Indiana Dunes looks really great. What I wanted to ask, is if there are any suggestions on specific places along the dunes to go? We’re interested in an area where the beach won’t be overly crowded, but will still have plenty of good sand and water for the boys. Any guidance is much appreciated!

I live here. The National Lakeshore actually stretches along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Dunes park in Chesterton is great. It also flows into Porter Beach which is public but not as easy to find if you are not local. Portage Lakefront is also a little tricky to find but it is lovely. West Beach is probably the most crowded but Wells Street beach is not far and usually only locals. West beach and the Dunes have pavilions. There is also another beach on the way to Mt Baldy I have forgotten the name of. Since you're out of town, I would suggest the Dunes Tourism Visitors Center on Rt 49. They are awesome for information and guiding you. They also have a ton of information about the local area and the official park, 3 dune challenge, and places to see. Good luck and have a great time!
Pet allowed?

At the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in the Chesterton area, pets on leashes are allowed on the beaches east of Indiana Dunes State Park and on all trails except Glenwood Dune, Great Marsh and Pinhook Bog.

We will be traveling to Michigan in September. Want to stay two nights in either National Lakeshore Campground or Indiana Dunes state park. 2 adults, one dog in an RV. Which is a better park for camping? Is one better situated for taking in the sites?

We didn't camp, but the Dunes State Park has the 3 Dunes Challenge that ends in a RV/campground that my family has walked through twice. It is well kept and close to the beach and dunes.
