From my first trip in the 1990s and all 20 or so since, I never miss Royal Street - a MUST visit for any visit to New Orleans.
If you are in New Orleans for a short time just wants to get the BEST French Quarter experience, a walk on Royal Street is a great place to start.

These streets are so beautiful to wander around. The balconies!! There are some aggressive sales people handing out samples outside the stores. We fell for it the first time, ended up going into a cosmetic store and having cream applied to our faces. The product cost a few hundred, and the sales lady was quite rude when we bought nothing. The next few times, we took the samples they were handing out and ran! LOL! It was kind of fun overall, just beware of that.

We enjoyed walking through the area. Marveling at the architecture and history. Not as dirty or run down like we expected. Music from artists too.

Wonderful shopping, great food, artists and incredible, laid-back people. Just don't go on royal street during Mardi gras, it's a hot mess at that time!

My favorite street in the French Quarter. Lots of amazing Art shops, restaurants, antiques and artisans. You can spend a couple hours exploring

This review is not for Royal Street specifically, but for Doreen Ketchens, who plays jazz on Royal and St. Peters Friday - Sunday from 10:30-2:30.
She is so, so good. I could have stood there listening to her for the entire 4 hours she plays!
Initially I wanted to take the kids to Preservation Hall, but the ticket price for 8 people and the waiting/line situation made me nervous it would be a poor use of money with little kids. Instead, we stood on the sidewalk and listened to Ms. Doreen Ketchens for the price of a tip. And it was SO GOOD.
DEFINITELY make this happen on your trip to NOLA. She's the best!

This is my second favorite street while I was at NO. I still think Bourbon Street was better. We walk a lot while in NO and the sidewalks were in need of repair with lots of uneven walking and trip hazards. Worth a walk but watch your step.

This is my favorite street in the french quarter. The architecture is beautiful and epitomizes Nola. The shops are unique and wonderful - don't miss Bevola lights, really neat!

Where can I hear best music from local institutions ? Any preferred time or day? Heard there are lot o local musicians around royal street and bourbon street, however not sure it’s better than river side in Jackson square.

How far it is depends on where you are starting from on Royal. They cross each other.

What are the weekend store hours for the shops on Royal Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans?

The store hours vary by the type store. The bars and restaurants and other eating places were open late. I believe the drug store at Royal and Iberville was open late too. This store also had an assortment of foods and drinks to take back to the hotel. I dont recall too many of the clothing and gift shops open too late. We walked the streets watching and listening to street musicians and I recall more looking into store windows.

Lots of jazz variety throughout New Orleans. If you are looking specifically for Dixieland or trad jazz, it can be found at many venues including the Steamboat Natchez dinner cruise and at bars such as the Spotted Cat on Frenchmen St. Dixieland bands often play in Jackson Square and on Royal St. near Rouse's Market. More modern jazz can be also be found in the many clubs on Frenchmen St.
wwoz radio and Offbeat Magazine (both on line) are good sources to find which bands are playing where.
