I have been here more times than I can count but certainly every time I eat at Arnaud’s since the museum is upstairs. I met Germaine when I was in my teens working in the Quarter and regularly ate lunch with her. She was heavily involved in Mardi Gras and these costumes are worth seeing in their glory. Germaine also led a horse drawn carriage parade through the French quarter at Easter. I participated with her once and it was quite grand. Even though my visits are very sentimental I think anyone would enjoy seeing this collection

We were invited up here to take a look around and we were astounded. First of all, Germaine Wells was quite a woman! The collection of Mardi Gras dresses and hats was just amazing. Photos don't do them justice. To see the dresses up close and to see the detail work was stunning. The museum is really more of a large exhibit, but it's worth it. The costumes prompted us to do some internet searching on Germaine Wells and we had a blast reading about this amazing woman. Stop in and have a look!

Although labeled a museum, this would be more properly called a gallery or, from a certain perspective: a shrine--and I mean that without the slightest degree of sarcasm. You access the Germaine Wells Mardi Gras Museum via the main entrance of Arnaud's, the NOLA restaurant and landmark founded by this remarkable woman. Proceed from the front door directly to the hostess counter, make a left and you'll see a flight of stairs that ascends to the second floor, where you'll find the museum. It's open only during restaurant hours, but don't be shy about checking it out even if you're not eating at Arnaud's. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

I was fortunate enough to visit early on a Saturday evening when Arnaud's itself was busy, but the museum was mine and mine alone to experience. It was, without a doubt, the most magical forty minutes I spent in my week-long visit to New Orleans.

If you don't already know, Germaine Cazanave Wells was one of the grand ladies of New Orleans and the Mardi Gras season from the late 1930's through the end of the 1960's. What you have here, then, is a collection of many of her favorite Mardi Gras outfits throughout the years, displayed on mannequins, beautifully lighted and accompanied by brief descriptions of the theme and year for which the outfit was made. Each is absolutely stunning, a tribute to the flamboyance and elegance of a bygone era, as well as to the lady herself. Verbal descriptions, even photographs, don't do justice to the extravagant beauty, imagination and fine detail on display here. You need to be in their presence to appreciate just how wonderful they are. Moreover, as one passes through the display, one feels a palpable sense of the lady who commissioned them. Like an act of reincarnation, the spirit of Germaine Wells sings vibrantly through each display, her abundant generosity, her grand style, impeccable taste and not insubstantial sense of whimsy. This is the fabled New Orleans of the mid-Twentieth Century, a world of glamour and grace that the world will not likely see again.

Whether you're a fan of fashion or design, whether Christian Dior or Alexander McQueen, even if you don't follow fashion at all, but are a fan of history, New Orleans or the pageantry of the Mardi Gras, this is one spot you simply have to see.

Germaine wells has the distinction of being Mardi gras queen more than anyone else. She also started a parade for easter. I think its fun to see the costumes she wore, and its kind of weird and creepy too. I think her spirit is wandering around up there. There are a few ghosts in that place if you ask me. Its kind of amazing people would spend all that kind of money on a dress for one party.. but people did, and people do. Its a thing down here in New Orleans.

If you've missed the Mardi Gras parades, fear not: a visit to this wonderful, but small, museum will put you right back such that you'll think you had been there. Many of the original costumes are on display, showcasing the brilliant and intricate sewing work it took to produce these treasures. The employees were extremely friendly and they even offered drinks and canapes.

I was in New Orleans and always interested in Mardi Gras and this place has a wealth of historical data that I was overwhelmed by its gowns and crowns of Kings and Queens and how everyone in the old days took it all so seriously. It made it clear to me that only the wealthy could afford such indulgences.

I really enjoyed the hour tour. New Orleans is rich in history and this is one of those places. It is a short one hour tour of the history of Mardi Gras and the makings of the costumes and floats. It would be a shame to miss this when in New Orleans.

By far very interesting. Amazing movie dress up and photographs of the way they make floats. This was the best thing I saw in Nola.
