Interesting cemetery and not like most others in New Orleans as the bodies here are buried underground. There are a lot of war vets buried here.

Vistied this cemetery 3 times. it is VERY different from the others. Bodies are typically buried only in body bags. At times no "plot" is assigned..... its a "find a spot and dig" type of thing. You will see bones laying on the ground, multiple people buried in the same spot over the years. It is a very eye opening experience

This cemetery is much different than all the other cemeteries in New Orleans, which makes it a very unique place to visit. There are information plaques throughout the cemetery detailing its history.

If you have never been to New Orleans, than perhaps this in not the first cemetery one should visit. However, if you have time it is worth the visit. It is a different experience than say St Louis no.1 or Lafayette no. 1. It is quite moving in it own way.

My boyfriend had been here years ago, so we sought it out on this trip. It was hard to believe that there is a cemetery in New Orleans where people are buried in the ground vs. above ground. It is situated behind the campus of Delgado Community College, which I suggest you find on the map, along with Holt Cemetery. We got there late in the day, and were able to walk around and see the various markers and decorations that people used to honor their loved ones. Quite a contrast to St. Louis Cemetery #1.

This cemetery is not included in many of the tourist attractions to visit while in NO. It is vastly different than Metairie and all of the St. Louis cemeteries but it is certainly worth taking 10 minutes to check it out. It is right down the street from Metairie cemetery. It is originally for the indigent population of NO. The city provided them with an area where their loved ones could be buried for free. Even today, there are no burial fees, you simply show up find a spot and bury your loved one. Graves are shallow and tombstone markers consist of anything from a concrete block to cardboard cutouts with sharpie inscriptions. When comparing to the aforementioned cemeteries it truly helps you appreciate what you have.
