Wunderschöne Barock Kirche, nein eine Basilika minor, die wir mit einer professionellen Führung besucht haben. Das zahlt sich wirklich aus, der Führer, Herr Georg, war unglaublich gut, sensationelles Wissen gepaart mit dem Geschick, sein Wissen toll weiter zu geben.

The Basilika St. Michael is a stunning building that is well worth the visit if you are in the Salzkammergut area.
Entry to the building is free, but there is a little shop and various points inside the church where you can leave a donation - either for lighting a candle for a loved one, or obtaining a bottle of holy water.
Whilst most of the attention will be focussed inside the church (and for very good reason, the various decorative altars are indeed works of art) I found the frescoe outside with the memorials to those that passed away during the World Wars to be particularly emotive - you can find this in an alcove to the right of the building as you approach it.
Thanks to the height of the Basilika you can easily find it from most areas of Mondsee. We were parked within the local couch park and I would say it was a 5-10 minute walk depending on your speed. There are some slopes but nothing major and the roads and pavements were quite quiet. There are also some additional tourist shops and cafes in the vicinity of the Basilika so I'd say this would be a good place to pass a couple of hours (longer if you're willing to walk down to the lake front from the Basilika).

Lors de notre voyage en Autriche, moi et ma conjointe avions planifié en notre itinéraire de passer par Salzbourg, la ville de Mozart mais aussi de faire la visite touristique en autocar et guide "La Mélodie du Bonheur".
C'est en ce tour qu'on nous nous a amené au lac de Mondsee et son hameau situé à une trentaine de minutes d'autobus de la ville. En ce coin pittoresque, nous aurons eu le privilège de visiter cette basilique mineure consacrée à Saint Michel.
Celle-ci a été érigée en cette espace où a existé depuis l'an 716 une abbaye fondée par Odilon, duc de Bavière.
Située près de la mairie de Mondsee, avec une petite place en sa devanture, ce temple de couleur jaune et blanche a deux gros clochers avec chacun leur horloge.
Si son allure extérieure demeure assez sobre, il n'en est pas ainsi de son intérieur.
La nef est assez grande et élevée avec de grosses colonnes.
Le maître-autel et son sanctuaire sont tout simplement somptueux avec ces multiples sculptures, dorures et de fort jolis vitraux.
On y a des autels latérales avec de grandes peintures, les boiseries sont foncées et vous devriez apprécier la chaire bien travaillée tout comme l'orgue au jubé arrière.
La boutique de souvenirs est en accord avec la place.
Allez en faire la visite, vous ne devriez pas être déçus...

We were on a Christmas Market River Cruise with AMAWaterways and stopped here on the way to visit the Christmas Markets in Salzburg.
This gothic church was constructed in the 15th century. It became famous because the wedding scene in the "Sound of Music" was filmed here with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

We visited the Basilica St. Michael during our excellent "Sound of Music " tour with Bobs Tours. Its a lovely small group tour showing various places of interest in relation to The Sound of Music. It located in a beautiful town called Mondsee.
This gothic church was constructed in the 15th century.
It became famous because of the "Sound of Music" was filmed here with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. In the film, Maria, led by Liesl, walked down the aisle to meet the baron in front of the main altar.
The church is stunning with a very impressive interior.

Wonderful church to visit. Yes we were on a Sound of Music tour and yes it was instantly recognizable from the movie. This is such a quaint church to visit in a special town to visit. It was just nice to walk around and visit. A bit out of the way from Salzburg. Enjoy.

my wife and I are big fans of the movie “The Sound Of Music,” and when we included Salzburg in our travel plans, we knew there would be several stops at filming locations. The basilica is outside of Salzburg proper, and easy to get to. There’s even free parking if you look hard enough. It will only take a few minutes to walk around inside, snap a few pics, and be on your way recommended

I visited this huge church whilst staying in the hotel next door. Mondsee is such a beautiful village by the lake and it is blessed with this wonderful church. Although most people will recognise this as the church where the wedding took place in the Sound of Music film, this is a beautiful place irrespective of that. It is much larger than one would expect from such a small population base. It is free to enter but they ask for 1 euro donation which is tiny for the experience.
