This was a beautiful ode to President Carter. The school itself was breathtaking with tons and tons of detail and information. Loved it!
The Depot was great as well. I do wish I could have seen a little more of the Carters actual home, but I understand privacy and what not. Pictures online will do you better than trying to view anything through the bushes and trees.
The best view of anything surrounding the property is the secret service house.
Highly suggest visiting. Plus his boyhood farm!

This building was interesting not only as a Museum dedicated to Jimmy Carter and the town of Plains, but just as a preserved high school from a specific era. It was very enjoyable to hear and see how much the town respects and loves the Carters. Jimmy Carter is the first president I voted for and remains one of my favorites.

This was a nice little stop, good for a couple of hours along my drive. The boyhood farm was nice and the high school/museum had lots of information about Carter's life and presidency. The lady working at the information desk was full of additional little details and stories about his life, which was great as well.

Lots of history of our oldest living president. He has done so much good in his life after his presidency. I wish we had more politicians like him.

Worth the stop. Also see the boyhood farm right down the road. We stayed at the Windsor

This site is perfectly sized for a day trip. Set amid the town of Plains and its environs, and amid President and Mrs. Carter's own home, you are quite literally seeing living history. Start at the high school which features a wealth of information about pedagogy during President Carter's childhood. The NPS staff here are very helpful in guiding you to your choice of next steps. I enjoyed watching the peanut harvest being processed for shipping during the late winter harvest. The boyhood farm and homestead is an excellent learning experience for those interested in how people lived in the early 20th century South. The tour guide was enthusiastic but not dogmatic. The self-guided campaign depot allows you to revisit the moments of the campaign in the place it all began. The stores in downtown Plains are varied and afford the chance to meet and chat with locals. If I'd had more time, I would have visited Mrs. Carter's childhood home. And the Buffalo Cafe which is operated by her relatives serval days a week during the lunch hour. A thoroughly enjoyable visit in a scenic rural town.

I realy liked visiting Plains and stopping to see the school, there was a lot of information on his school years, election, presidentcy, and his and Rosalynn's humanitary efforts. I loved walking around the school and getting the feel of it. We snuck into the auditorium and looked around. Nothing has changed from a hundread years ago, I love it. Great place to cool off or get out of the rain. You can also get your passport book stamped in the gift shop.

We learned a lot here. I guess I never realized the humanitarian that Mr and Mrs Carter were. It just got announced a couple days ago that he’s on hospice care so this trip was a little extra special given the news. I’m so glad we came. The visitor center is his old school and is indoors in case you come on a rainy day. We also drove around to the other sites and stopped at the depot and boyhood home. I recommend this stop if you’re in the area or just passing through.

My husband and I have talked about attending Jimmy Carter's Sunday School class and as luck would have it Carter is leading the class on the same day that we will be near the area. What time should we arrive? Any advice? Suggestions for places to eat? We plan on visiting the National Historic Park after church. Thanks

Sorry I did not read carefully as to place to eat. We had a tremendous dinner at Rosemary and Thyme on the second floor of the Windsor Hotel. Very easy to miss as there is almost non existent signage, just go in the Windsor hotel and go to the second floor. Make sure you go to Rosemary and Thyme and not the sister bar Floyd's. Hotel built in 1892. Nice laid back fine dinning in the $20 range for entrees. The chicken bites and mushrooms were great apps, wife had salmon and I had deconstructed cordon bleu. All very nice, around $75 for 2 apps, 2 entrees, a glass of wine, and desert We also had hot dogs at Monroe's hot dog and billiards. Even though we did not see a billiard table we did share 3 combo hot dogs, and an ample order of cheesy fries and two cokes for about $10. Atmosphere is country store and you order and pick up at counter. Wife and I thoroughly enjoyed.
