Flexenbahn the new lift connecting St Anton with Zurs is very nice, the same nice gondolas as up towards Stuben. The only downside is that you have to get out and change the gondola or switch to the seating life towards St Anton. The infrastructure is not integrated which would have been a clear advantage. The ski slopes of St Anton are perfect for the advanced skier, the resort is not the best for beginners, inexperienced skiers and families with children. Perfect entertainment for young people and school classes. Most hotels are located a bit from the ski slope and you have to walk a bit. Get ski out / ski in hotel. Several black pistes and perfect for those seeking challenges. Excellent that St Anton is integrated with Zurs and that it is possible to get all the way to Lech.

St. Anton am Arlberg is a beautiful Alpine village in Austria, perfect for a summer holiday. There are amazing mountains, great slopes for skiing and snowboarding. You can enjoy local dishes such as Käsespätzle, Wiener Schnitzel and Apfelstrudel.

This beautiful village offers the perfect blend of outdoor activities, delicious food and peaceful Alpine beauty.

Good weather and closure of half of the ski area for no apparent reason. An area where you spend more time waiting than skiing... €200 for 2 adults and a child with a partially open area... As if I were buying a car without a hood and without a door but full price...

A disappointment, €200 per day for 2 adults and 1 child with 50% of the slopes closed without wind on protected slopes. Even when everything is open, the area is poorly organized with bottlenecks. You will spend more time waiting at the bottom of the slopes than skiing. Very poor value for money, very expensive restaurants in the resort. To flee !

No signs that slopes were anyway properly groomed more than once in the week we were there. Ploughed up snow for the week. Off piste snow was in better condition.

Beautiful ski area but poor customer service. I had bought a ski pass for three days, but only realised on the last day that I was still considered a minor. I would have gotten my money back on the second day, but not like this. I also offered to buy the points ticket (for multiple trips and deduct the days), but that didn't work either.

JAN24 First time in St Anton and not impressed by the resort management. Random lift closures due to ?? unknown reasons for 4 out of 6 days which mean you cannot ski out of the area only take the bus which is not free past St Christophe. Bus takes 45 mins to get to Lech 10 euros return , CASH ONLY.
The pistes back into the resort centre are blacks and reds (red 51 is a mountainous mogul field might as well be black). This means a funnelling of all abilities mainly onto the long black 52 . Blue 52/50 has been closed due to avalanche concerns for most of the season, crazy, just blast it! Safest way down at end of day's skiing is to take the Galzigbahn lift down. You spend a lot of money on the Arlberg pass thinking you will be skiing between 6 towns but they all become isolated once connecting lifts like Flexenbahn are closed and you have to stand up on the crowded buses. Each town has a few lifts open to prevent a no-ski claim but you cannot link them up. One day the lift situation changed at midday but too late to help you get further out and back again.

How on earth can I review an area as huge and impressive as At Anton’s skiing? Falling back onto my 10 top-tips. Worked for us, though of course might not for everyone….

1. This is a serious skiing place for serious skiers. Experts, off-piste, powder hounds and confident intermediates will love it. Not for timid skiers or beginners.

2. The St Anton pistes can get seriously crowded, though the second week of January seemed to be a consistently quiet week, after the New Year holidays and before the majority come out skiing. We really never had to queue.

3. The blues below Galzig around Osthang and Tanzboden are terrific to warm-up and get ski legs functioning. A great way to access is up Gampen (shorter queues than the Galzig gondola), down piste 26 and up the Zammermoos chairlift.

4. Returning to St Anton, the blues through Steissbachtal seem to be permanently closed due avalanche risk (pistes 55/56). This limits the return route into St Anton to just the black (piste 52 / Kandahar). Now early afternoon, this can be a delight, warmed by the sun and most skiers off having lunch. Later it can be a ‘mare, and best avoided at the end of the day if you don’t like weaving through crowded bumpy pistes. There is no shame riding the Galzig gondola down.

5. Rendle is an uncrowded gem, though shady first thing until the sun hits it. Ignored by the masses, it offers great blues and reds, and piste 1 back into St Anton is so much fun.

6. Further afield, piste 100 is a classic, either above from Schindler via red 85 or by joining from the Ulmer Hutte at the top of the Arlenmähder chairlift. It’s long, in places a blue + (if like us you are more used to the French grading system) and does attract a fair number of reckless breakneck ‘bravos’. But as a challenge, try skiing it non-stop down to Alpe Rauz.

7. From Alpe Rauz, cross the road, be adventurous! Explore Stuben / Albona. Again missed by the masses, but some great reds and piste 107 is terrific under the morning sun.

8. Zürs, both 144 and 145 are must-do’s. Piste 145 is a rollicking rolling blue back to the Muggengrat chairlift, while piste 145 has a dramatic entrance but then long sweeping descents and turns. Breathtaking! But, and here’s the but. The last bit is long flat stretch paralleling the road into Zürs, so release those brakes early enough to avoid a long pole into the village.

9. The White Ring is another ‘must-do’, but not on a Friday as it gets super-crowded; it seems to be a last day of the holiday thing, which can lead to long stressful queues for the lifts back into St Anton. We’re not super-fast skiers, but catching the Gampen chairlift at 0845, we were at Seeköpf restaurant by 1010 (though kept on going). Ski route 170 was groomed for the long glorious run into Zug, and we extended the itinerary slightly to take in Zuger Hochlicht, skiing 227 / 200 into Lech. We actually had lunch at the Trittkopf BBQ, with the White Ring safely behind us and no concerns getting back to St Anton, more relaxing. A great day out.

10. Being more used to the French Alps, we noted there are fewer places to eat or drink in this area. Rendle and Gampen both have industrial feeding self-service facilities: very good food, very reasonably priced, but busy. Sharing tables is the norm, interesting conversations with other skiers from mainland Europe and further afield. Trittkopf we loved. Terrific views, BBQ themed food. A more traditional alternative was the Albona restaurant. When we visited, it was quiet though I understand it can be too busy to get in. There again, we stopped there early. Seeköpf, well, great food but dysfunctional service on the two occasions we visited (we gave it a second chance). Balmalp offers a touch of luxury and glamour, but served us well as our White Ring coffee stop.
