I have always wanted to visit here where Saint Damien celebrated Mass for those who had leprosy - now called Hansen's Disease. It was more than a visit, it was an experience of sharing something with those who suffered and died here. A cemetery just outside spoke of that. Inside and just sitting quietly for awhile, one could feel the whole building speak through the floors and walls. The stories told come alive when you are there!

The stories behind the church and the people who attended there are very interesting. It's humbling to hear what the people had to endure.

I sat in a pew, and right below me was a hole in the floor drilled by or at the request of Father Damien so the church-goers would come to church and have a way of getting rid of their spit...rolled up banana leaf pushed down into the hole.. Once the parishioners felt they had a way not to defile the church with their spit, they became regular attendees. You sit here is this church and try to think of all those inflicted with Hansen's Disease, sitting in the very pews you are sitting in. Makes your head spin. A beautiful little church. Outside is where Father Damien's grave is located...filled now with only the remains of his right hand.

Fantastic history. Be sure to get a guide to tell you about the history of the place. The acoustics are amazing. You will see a bust of Father Damien inside. There are apparently holes cut into the floor to allow the saliva of the leprosy patients to drip out of the church. Makes you really see how far we as humans have come.

Other than ruins and cemeteries, St. Philomena is all that remains of the original leper colony. It is a stark reminder that there can be spiritual and physical beauty even in a terrible place. The church has two wings, one reserved for lepers, who had been kept outside during mass before Damien's time. The acoustics are amazing. The cemetery beside the church hosts
Damien's original grave plus those of others important to the early days. You can come here only with a tour, but it is well worth the time and expense.

To get to St. Philomena's you must take a guided tour of the Kalaupapa peninsula. Kalaupapa is both beautiful and quite sad considering its history. A moving place of sad history.

Visiting this, and the entire compound, truly makes you understand both the wonderful humanity of people and the unavoidable inhumanity of people. Father Damien worked tirelessly to build this church as well as more than 300 others (I believe). His compassion to a group of people who were shown no compassion is reason for beatification. Seeing his grave beside the church, and then looking out at the fields where tens-of-thousands of unmarked graves remain hidden is mind numbing.
And what's to happen to this place? Will it remain a protected National Park? Will it be developed with homes and high rises?
Once the last remaining patient dies (yes, there are 7 or so patients still living there), I'm hoping someone or something will make sure this place lives-on and the stories are told again and again. Read the book, Molokai, and anything else you can get your hands on. Be prepared to smile, laugh and cry.
