We really enjoy visiting the energy lab area when in Kona. We have been to a number of facilities in that area. The Abalone Farm was new to us this time. Our son was in a wheelchair and the tour was pretty accessible. A few gravel areas but we made it. Our tour guide was great. He claimed not to be a scientist and only a guide, but really new his stuff and fun facts. We saw several Abalone and other interesting sea animals, tasted several forms of seaweed and two versions of Abalone.

Mahalo for your coming and glad to hear that you enjoyed 60 min educational farm tour. Although we are acting aquafarm, the farm tour route is considerably planned for disability people as much as we can, but I am still pleased to hear that your son made it! We did the BBQ. Five star experience! Lance was so helpful and catered to our needs during our BBQ experience and provided everything needed for our BBQ. Tasty grilles abalone and other seafood is a must! Highly recommend. Mahalo again Lance!!

I will be honest and I had never heard of abalone, but now I am a fan. Great tour - happy to see the sustainable practices. Highly recommend for any seafood lover.

No worries, most of our first time visitors are not aware what abalone is, so it is important for us to explain to the guests about abalone and their lifecycle in informative way. The tour was just OK. I would never recommend it to anyone. Would be good as a stop on an islands foods tour or something but not worth the time/money on it's own. Was hoping to have lunch at the food truck but they didn't have grilled abalone on the menu and nothing else seemed good after having tasted steamed and canned abalone on the tour.

Read a lot of reviews that this tour was “informative” and “informational” and was worried it might not be that great of a fit for our 5 year old. This tour absolutely was informative and informational but was also fun! Our 5 year old loved it and so did we. We never knew holding an abalone could be so cool, they are awesome little creatures. We enjoyed learning about all the different stages of the abalone. The sea grapes and seaweed were delicious. The abalone itself wasn’t our favorite but it was still an experience. Our tour guide, Charlie was kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. We are so glad we went!

Thanks Taylor for your coming! We are so glad that your kid was also happy to be here with you. We are always thinking how our tour should be enjoyable for all generation which isn't easy, but we somehow created a way to implement. No worries about abalone taste as you all have different appetite, but more important thing is to let people know what abalone is and how critical their lifecycle is based upon the fact that they are endangered creature. In my (albeit limited) experience, farm tours are hit-or-miss. This one is a hit.
Initially skeptical about visiting a 10 acre collection of fish tanks, I came away impressed by the tour guide, the farm, and the product. We were a three generation tour - including two three year olds.
The guide was superb - incredibly knowledgable on aquaculture, not just abalone. He was always patient with the kids, kept the whole thing moving, and was happy to go into as much or as little detail as people wanted. The farm itself is impressive - and their processes for spawning, raising, and harvesting abalone are all interesting.
At each step, the guide pulled things out of the tank to share with everyone, and made a point of giving time to the 3 year olds to discover and get comfortable. Last stop is a bit of a touch tank of critters cleared out of the water system - sea urchins, star fish, etc.
We were a bit disappointed with the food truck - the butter/garlic abalone there had been cooked too far in advance and were served room temperature and tough. But the sample abalone on the tour was superb. (The ceviche plate of raw abalone was excellent, btw.)

We are always thinking how our tour entertains all generation equally well. Adults can enjoy listening scientific story, aquaculture management and kids can learn abalone and local creatures by listening and touching. Sorry to hear that you didn't have the best steamed abalone at food trailer. To be honest, it isn't easy for serving hot/warm steamed abalone in timely manner as it takes 15-20 min to steam and the meat gets shrunk if you keep steaming...You enjoyed our abalone carpaccio that is good! Please come back again in the future! Mahalo

We decided to do this tour on a whim given the good reviews. We were really happy we did! We booked morning of and ended up being the only people in our group. Our tour guide Kai was great. We informative but also overall interesting. Fun getting to see the different abalone, a few other sea creatures, and taste some different things.

You know what? I’d like to give this 4 stars because I wanted to try more abalone. But given the price, I can understand their sampling portions.
Their tour description is TERRIBLE. It’s way too brief. Someone must’ve written it half asleep. The tour guide is actually extremely knowledgeable in the process and the biology of the species despite the fact that he (Carlos) only relegated himself as being “just a tour guide.”
So you can learn a lot, you experience a live species that you’ve never had to think about and seems alien to you. And then you get to taste a few things you never would have.
Given the group size and the passing airplanes, there didn’t seem to be a ton of room for questions, but you’re free to ask something if you need to. It’s not one of those tours with a ton of candor and relationship building. It’s more “guided experience.” Carlos has some jokes that the group seemed to miss. Maybe they weren’t funny enough, maybe they were too dry or nuanced, but I greatly appreciated them nonetheless.
So 5 stars. If this costed $60, I’d say 4 stars. But it’s fairly priced, it’s unique, it’s stimulating, it’s 5 stars. Toodle-loo.

This tour was great! Carlos our tour guide was a wealth of information and really seemed to love his job. It was well done, he answered all questions and truly cared. We had the DIY bbq afterwards which was just as good! Highly recommend!
