My title is misleading but not totally inaccurate. We almost gave-up visiting as our first pass at the small parking lot a block in front of the Museum found it full. Figuring we would find street parking we discovered most street parking was not allowed or the few spaces were full. Made one last drive thru of the lot and got lucky. Better yet, while it is a pay for parking lot; sundays are free.
Walked to what we thought was MOHAI and discovered it was not but rather it was a wooden boat museum. MOHAI is a block behind with no accessible parking for visitors. So we walked over and saw a sign suggesting no toilets in museum so you are to use unisex ones at next door cafe. One of those two toilets would not flush.
On the plus side, we avoided the $25 pp entrance fee to MOHAI because we are members of an Art Museum that has a reciprocal arrangement with certain museums around the US.
Museum is interesting, primarily shedding light on the formation and development of Seattle. It is well maintained (and actually, does have public toilets). It closes at 5 pm and we got there about 3:30 pm after the parking and walking fiascos so we did feel a bit rushed.

Added this on as a last-minute visit and SO glad we did. Second only to MoPOP as a brilliant museum. Learn about the history of the area, including an amazing song about the great fire, and even an interactive game to teach you some Chinook phrases. Definitely a must-see.

This was the best museum in Seattle. Very interesting and interactive exhibits. from the original peoples of Seattle all the way up to present day, with everything in working order unlike so many museums. And there is a small building next-door where people demonstrate how to make small wooden boats.

The museum information is very well displayed and informative about Seattle and the area. The museum has a nice location on the waterfront of Lake Union.

We didn't know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised. The exhibits were interesting, well-designed, and with stories that flowed. The section on innovation was quite intriguing, along with an informative exhibit on Microsoft's founding. Parking was a bit of a mystery.

The permanent exhibits has a number of interesting elements and history of Seattle/Washington businesses. The special exhibits are small but were packed with fascinating information. Learned lots about rowing especially the boatmaking with the rowing exhibit. We never knew about the Junior League Northwest Art Project so the exhibit was a great way to learn the history of it.

Weird, jingoistic vibes. The exhibits were too surface-level to engage with much. My favourite exhibits were a rowing boat and parts of the native plants exhibit

You can easily spend 2-3 hours in this museum. It is one of the most interesting museums I’ve ever visited and provides an interactive and in-depth understanding of how the Seattle of today came to be. As you travel through time there are many things about Seattle which will surprise you! I’ve been to many museums during my travels and this is one of the best.

So underrated!!! I spent 3+ straight hours here. The maritime section is tiny. Which was actually good for me because I didn’t have much time left on my visit. I did not visit the kids area so I can’t speak to that. I looked at EVERYTHING on the first and second floor. Some exhibits were interactive which was neat. I wish I’d known there was an audio tour. I saw the QR codes too late. I wish it would’ve been included with the map. I do like that they offer a physical map. The gift shop is on par with other places. The ONLY thing I would change is the volume in the room about the Seattle fire. First that exhibit is weird. Basically a Disney type song about a fire. And it is SO loud. You don’t realize it until you’ve left the room and are all the way across the room trying to read something else and can’t concentrate because you can still hear the fire song. I even put in my noise cancelling earbuds and that didn’t help. Turn down the volume! But I really enjoyed my visit here.

Not that large a museum, just one main floor, but good for 1-2hours. A varied collection of exhibits on a pathway all the way around a central atrium. Good descriptions and interaction. The musical telling of the story of the great fire was a particular highlight.

Hi there,
There are multiple, easy parking options around the museum. You can park at the ACG lot (west of the museum) for $5 with validation, which can be obtained at MOHAI's admission desk. There are also multiple city lots (on Valley St. between Westlake Ave. and Boren Ave.) around the museum that have various rates for parking on the weekend that are substantially less than weekdays (usually around $5 for 10 hours). The museum itself also has ADA parking available directly next to the building.
It is difficult to say how busy the parking will be on a Sunday. That said, our visitors generally do not have problems because of the multiple options available.
