The restaurant at the museum was a HUGE disappointment. We purchased a sandwich for $18 to share and received a 2 inch part of a sandwich. Obviously not shareable. We also purchased the seafood chowder to supplement our sandwich and it had so many pierces of shell you had to chew and spit out the big pieces. Be warned!

Many floors and sections with many types of exhibits, local people’s history, paintings, sculptures (pink bear cover with feathers?) and some children’s displays. Little bit of something for everyone.

An amazing museum! The exhibits touch on the rich culture of the native people. They also have fun for the whole family with interactive exhibits.

We love the Holiday art show as well as the many excellent exhibits. The feathered bears were a favorite this year.

Take it or leave it good to see about native Alaskans. Museum is expensive. But I liked the native Alaskans bits. There is a science section too

As others have noted, half the museum was closed. The other half felt as if the exhibit designers wanted to discourage, not encourage, engagement with visitors. Frankly, I can't remember visiting a less impressive museum. The tiny one in Kodiak was far superior.
My feeling during our visit was that a bunch of eggheads had been tasked with creating the exhibits and did so, but only to impress each other. Much of the material was too darkened to be readable and one left knowing precious little about what should be an impressive educational experience.

It was pouring rain, so we were looking for an indoor activity. We found the immersive installation by Paola Pivi quite interesting, especially as we had a chance to meet and talk with the artist. The “globe” room in the Cartography exhibit was neat. Lots of information and artifacts in the permanent First People of Alaska exhibit. Definitely a good place to stay dry!

SO underwhelmed. The top 2 (of 4) floors of the museum (half!) were closed for remodeling / renovation.
The Native Alaskan cultures exhibit on the 2nd floor had remarkable displays... what I could make of them. The display cases were so dimly lit it was difficult to see & read around your (and every one else's) reflections. What would you suppose would be the percentage of "winter" season (mid September) patrons that were "seniors"? 20%? 30%? Nearly everyone my wife and I passed in the museum were. And what do we know about older people's vision? It's dim and dimming. So, "Let's turn down the exhibit lights!"
New in my experience were, instead of info on cards beside the objects, touch info-screens at one end of the display cases. You had to stop gazing at an item, step down to the touch info-screen, wait your turn, select your item of interest from the silhouettes arranged like in the case, read the info... then step back and work through other visitors to rejoin where you were viewing from, and repeat. Such a pain.

Part of this is no doubt my fault but this museum should be named Anchorage ART Museum. We came prepared to learn more about Anchorage history and see exhibits of both pioneers and indigenous peoples. Instead, we saw pictures and paintings of various nations in the north. We were very disappointed.

Is this open since the earthquake? Is Christmas a good time to go?

That is a good question. When I visited it was late February to early March of this year for my conference. On their website, they still have exhibits and events going on.
However, if I were you I'd contact the museum to be sure since the main road to the museum is almost directly from the airport.
I suggest going during Feb-Aug (more daylight). December there is a lot of snow and rain and driving conditions if one isn't used to it can be hazardous. Also in December, the sun rises at 10:30 am and sets at around 3pm so your daylight is cut dramatically short. I hope this helps!

Hi there! I'm a museum employee. We have a few different areas under construction or renovation this summer. The Alaska Gallery on the 2nd floor will reopen on September 15. The new Rasmuson Wing, which offers 25,000 square feet of gallery space, will open on September 15 as well. Hope this helps, and feel free to contact the museum with any other questions!

We plan on being in Anchorage June 2017
Does the Cultural Pass for visiting the museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center require both visits to be made on the same day? How do you attach the dog team rides? I haven't found much information on scheduling specifics for this activity. What days and times are they offered?
Thanks.

If you go to the Anchorage Museum website you can pull up by date what is on the exhibit schedule.
A quick look shows there is Beyond the Arctic Circle, River of Bears, Cosmic Colors, Experience the Aurora: Plus!, etc.
There is also a curators tour and guided summer tours offered at select times. There's quite a lot offered. Definitely check out the website for descriptions and exact dates and times.
I hope you enjoy our fair city. Have fun!

How much time to drive from airport to trailhead

I would have to agree with the other reviewers, you would need to be more specific about which trailhead you are looking for. We have thousands of miles of trails here in Alaska. If you are considering the area called Turnagain Arm, between Anchorage and Girdwood, there are several developed trails of varying skill levels. That area ranges from 12 to 36 miles from the airport. Some days you can drive that in 20 minutes and some days it can take an hour or more.
