Many people were walking their dogs or just strolling in the cemetery. It was more like a gorgeous park with rolling hills and the most beautiful grave stones and statues. The most famous grave site in the cemetery is the Witch Bonney Statue. Took a bit, but we found it and the Lion (her protector) you can find by following where she is looking. You can google the legend about these two. Fascinating.

Lowell cemetery tours are offered twice a year in the spring and fall. I recently took the spring tour. The guide Richard Howe is very knowledgeable about the history of the city and people buried there. The spring tour took an hour and a half and only covered half of the cemetery. The fall tour is different and covers the part of cemetery not addressed in the spring. I recommend comfortable shoes as there is quite a bit of walking up slight hills.

It is very interesting to see the history of one of the New England's oldest cities. Here you can definitely see it.

This cemetery is full of Lowell history. If you have time to plan, take one of Dick Howe's cemetery tour to get a real feel for the Lowellians who are buried there. The stones have stories and the mix of old and new is just like the city itself.

This cemetery is second only to Mount Auburn in Cambridge. If you can, Dick Howe (of Lowell) give tours in Fall and Spring. Bring your camera as there are some amazing stones and monuments. I recommend wearing sneakers as there are hills. Also visit Fort Hill park which is adjacent.

Went for a funeral, the grounds were quite lovely and well maintained. The Chapel was small, intimate and lovely.

The Lowell Cemetery is a beautiful Garden Cemetery (like Mt. Auburn Cemetery) with rolling landscape, distinctive and interesting monuments, well maintained grounds with perennials, annuals, flowering trees, and the adjacent Concord River. It is a great place to stroll or power walk. There are educational tours twice a year that describe the lives of some of the "residents" especially their contributions to the local area. The recent addition of the Columbarium fits nicely into the cemetery. It has benches and is a great place to sit, absorb nature, and think.

Lovely place to take a walk. The grounds are beautiful with hilly areas and flat ones, old and new interesting gravestones to read, and lovely flowers, trees and shrubs to admire. The cemetery is large enough that you can visit many times and always find something new. Artists often paint here, bird watchers luxuriate, writers write, and meditators meditate. I always leave with a feeling of serenity.

The Lowell Cemetery is a Victorian garden cemetery so it is a great place for a walk. Rick Howe leads a tour of the many memorial monuments and there are many fascinating lives of people buried there. There are two free tours offered in the Spring and Fall by Richard Howe who is the Register of Deeds of the area that contains Lowell. He is an interesting tour guide and Lowell historian. There is plenty of parking on the cemetery paved paths. The tour lasts about 1.5 hours and is an easy walk with lots to see. And what you learn will send you to the net and/or the library to learn more. On the most recent tour there were about 100 people, but there was plenty of room for more. The cemetery is very beautifully landscaped and is a very calming place.
