Such a beautiful place. The facility was not open the day we visited, but just seeing the grounds was worth the stop. The building and the setting are amazingly beautiful. It's a short distance off the highway. Great photo opportunity. Highly recommend!

My family and the other families that came while we were there were all disappointed that the hatchery was closed for the winter. There should be a notice on the website. However, it was still a nice place for a picnic, and we enjoyed feeding the fish and ducks.

Putting forth my usual disclaimer I am in the hospitality industry and I'm currently helping to restore a historic Hotel in Independence California and then the general manager of that hotel so I may be biased towards the area but I don't think so.
Those in the know keep highway 395 and the Owens Valley to themselves because there is so much to do and see here and it remains an undiscovered wonderful Paradise.
This place is one of the hidden gems just a short distance off of 395 just north of Independence.
If you're traveling in this quarter in the summer you have found your ideal picnic spot they're wonderful shade trees soft green grass and ponds filled with trout and ducks to entertain you will you experience a cool breeze and look down on 395.
This wonderful hatchery is ran by volunteers and is worth a stop to learn how trout used to and still do make their way into the high Lakes of the Sierra Nevada.
The volunteers are knowledgeable I'm passionate about this historic landmark and there's even a fun thrift shop to explore where the proceeds go to help fund their programs.
Even if you're just passing through the area take the time to turn off and spend a little bit of time exploring this historical landmark if you're an architectural buff there's even more fun in store for you.

Convenient from highway 395, we have made picnic stops here several times over the decades. It is great that it has been preserved through some difficult times. It's fun to feed the ducks and fish.

Old Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery is a very quick detour from US395. It is worth a stop whether you have kids or no kids. The fish hatchery was built in 1916 from European builders. The picture of the building with the mountains behind is superb. The place sells fish food to feed the trout. Our kids loved feeding the fish. One of the volunteers gave us a tour of the place that had a museum of the history of the area and the wildlife. The kids got rubber ducks, which our kids carry with them everywhere. The State of California should preserve this hatchery for tourism.

This is a wonderful place to stop and stretch your legs on a road trip. My family (kids 4 and 8) were passing through the area and stopped to check out the fish. The museum is free and operated by volunteers. They have little baby fish to look at inside. Outside there are much larger fish you can feed. I recommend purchasing fish food inside the hatchery since you get a big bag for $1, as opposed to a handful for $0.25 lakeside. The bathrooms here are clean, the grounds are really beautiful. This would be a great place to have a picnic lunch and let the kids run around.

I have been coming to this place for decades and have seen it when it was full production, after the devistating mudslides and restored to its previous glory! Although it is no longer a production facility, it does have a disply that shows what it was life in the previous years.

This was once an important, working fish hatchery that was critical for raising golden trout in the area. In recent years, after both fires and floods, it is now just a small museum, with feeding ponds out front. The short film in the museum, as well as the exhibits and related stories, are quite interesting and worth a stop if you are so inclined, The ponds out front, and fish food for purchase for a nominal fee, make a fun feeding experience for the kids. We enjoyed our visit, but if you are looking for a working fish hatchery, this is no longer the place.
