Really pretty hike. The whole thing is a big loop, part of which goes along the Chattahoochee River. Lots of trees, lots of shade, and you get several openings out into the river. At the northern most point of the hike is the famous bamboo forest. Worth the extra hike, if only to see tall bamboo trees in Georgia 😜
Good amount of signage along the way, although I did have to stop a few folks to make sure I'm going in the right direction.
Parking is a pain. On the East trail, I found only 2 lots and they were both full at 4pm on a Saturday. Came back Sunday morning, around 10:30am and that was ok although still almost full. There were signs with more parking available somewhere else but I didn't try to find it.
The total loop is around 5 miles, including the in-and-out part that takes you to the bamboo forest. If you do some of the side paths, I'm sure it'll be longer.

Great hike, not too challenging. Right on the Hooch river and cool bamboo garden. Slight elevation change but overall easy hike.

Here's the thing: The trails are great. They're scenic, hilly, and there's variety, but there is a leash law for a reason.
3/4th of the dogs I encountered on this trail were off leash (there is a leash law in place here), two of which tried coming for my dog that was on leash. We won't be back just for that reason. Too many careless dog owners.

This is a beautiful place with great trails and views, but for some reason the local population has decided to turn it into an informal dog park. We encountered many dogs running off leash, some large ones without an owner in sight. As the dogs are running freely they are also defecating freely, and we saw few owners with bags in hand (indicating they were not picking up after their animals.) For our "parting gift," my companion took home, as a gross souvenir, a bit wad of dog feces on his shoe. In another testament to lawlessness at this Unit, at the Indian Trail entrance people park on the shoulder of the single lane road (marked "No Parking") that leads to the parking lot, making it extremely difficult to enter and exit (cars can't pull over to pass each other and must back up). I wish the National Park Service would focus on getting the scofflaws in this park to follow the rules and make it a place that's pleasant for everyone to visit, not just them and their dogs.

This morning around 8AM, my 20 pound Jack Russell terrier (who was on a leash) and I were attacked by a gray pit bull (named Bella who was not on a leash) on the East Palisades Trail at the Chattahoochee River. I thought we were going to die when it happened - but we were not hurt. I had already picked up my dog and was trying to shelter her in my arms, when the pit bull knocked us to the ground. The owner was able to get her off before more damage was done. This is the reason it's against the law to have your dog off leash anywhere - on any trail - even in the water - within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

My daughter and I along with my five year old Granddaughter visited on Tuesday. It’s an easy hike down to the Palisades section of the Chattahoochee River. This is one of the most scenic views in metro Atlanta. The day we were there people were riding the rapids in Kayaks and canoes. Also saw a paddle boarder out on the river. The trail is natural terrain and is fairly well maintained. The trail winds through towering trees in the mostly hardwood forest as it descends to the river. You will cross several wooden bridges. The day we were there a tree had fallen and blocked the trail but it was easy to navigate around. We hiked about 4 miles round trip but you can walk even further if you have the time. Peaceful, relaxing environment. It was a fun day. Both dog and family friendly.
FYI-The actual road into the gravel parking area is one lane. There is a $5.00 day use fee that you pay on line.

Went to east palisades early this morning and traffic was being turned away. Does anyone know what’s going on? Is it closed from COVID?
Love this trail. Very versatile and dog friendly!

The hiking trail that goes along the river for a good portion of the hike is probably the best option. Its not accessible by bike and is a little tricky in a couple of spots, but otherwise a pretty simple trail. This park is easily accessible to Atlanta residents and inside the perimeter.
