This is the location of the "shot heard round the world," and the beginning of the American War for Independence. However, you don’t have to be a history lover to enjoy Old North Bridge and Minuteman National Historic Park. In the spring, summer, and fall the scenery is beautiful & ever changing. There are gardens and paths to walk and the Concord River flows through. And for those of you who want to learn more history, there is a museum on the site with friendly and informative national park service ranger/staff who will help you learn as little or as much as you would like. I had not expected to be as engaged as I had come for my father but the ranger really knew how to make it interesting for everyone. North Bridge Visitor Center is located in a brick mansion & features a short video about the North Bridge fight, a bookstore and exhibits. This is a great place to go to while away a few hours or even have a picnic and then you can head into Concord for a great lunch, stroll around the town and do a little shopping.

Of all of the point in our trip to Lexington and Concord, this was the place that where the feeling of hallowed ground came over me as we toured. The Bridge and the other monuments are a symbol of what others have done to assure that we have freedom in this country.
As a Revolutionary War buff, I'm also grateful to the NPS volunteer who took time with me to show the sunken road which is where three companies of light infantry under Captain Parsons crossed the bridge and proceeded to Col. James Barrett's house looking for cannon. He also showed me where about 400 militia fired upon the light infantry upon their return. That was the beginning of the British withdraw that eventually turned into a rout back to Boston. There is nothing like seeing and walking the ground of a battlefield with someone who know it. Thanks to the volunteer.

The site itself is historic, and you may get a "plus" experience if your visit is timed to have an engaging ranger guide you.

But keep in mind that you are visiting a location only, and the current bridge is the 6th one that has been here since the 1775 standoff with the British.

There are standard displays at the Visitor's Center with a short film that tells the story (a very mundane production).

The bridge that separated the redcoats from 400 waiting colonists. The shot heard round the world happened at this spot. Beautiful area and fascinating history.

We stopped to see the old Manse but it was closed so we walked through the nearby field, turned left and trekked down to the bridge. On the way we passed a small memorial to the British casualties of the first engagement with the colonial minutemen which initiated the American Revolution. The "shot heard round the world" was fired here as 400 colonists assembled on the east bank of the Concord River while about 100 British regulars appeared on the opposite bank. No one knows who fired the first shot but the "Redcoats" retreated and the actions continued along what is known as the Battle Road Trail. We stood near the Minuteman monument looking back across the bridge and couldn't help but feel a connection with those brave colonists who gave birth to the world's greatest nation!!!

We loved walking around this park. First we drove to the main office building to walk the trail to the Old North Bridge. This was in mid-July, 2021 and with all the recent rains, the path was flooded and closed. After talking to a park ranger for information, we drove down to the parking lot in front of the Old Manse. From there is was a short walk to the bridge. A memorial plaque is here as well as a giant Minuteman statue next to the bridge. The bridge itself is walkable to cross the river. Obviously this is not the original bridge, it just looks too new. A very pretty view of the river from here and one can see the old boathouse (the boathouse has been rebuilt as well). Wonderful scenery here as we took time to envision the battle that took place here centuries ago. One of the most significant history locations in US history. Don't miss it.

Beautiful location! We kayaked here from the Southbridge boat house and pulled the kayaks up just before the bridge so we could walk around and explore. The visitors center was open which I guess is unusual for a Saturday. It was informative and a cool piece of history to learn about.

Loved it, great presentation by a Ranger. Learned some new facts. The setting is gorgeous and worth the trip but then the history is so powerful. The walk from the visitor center to the bridge is fantastic, quite easy and great views.

Site of the first shots fired by the colonists in the American Revolution. The visitors center was closed when we were there, but the bathrooms were still open. I recommend the Monument Street parking for those who have mobility issues.
