“Reproduction of Thoreau's Cabin is a Time Machine!!”

History was made here

Visiting the Thoreau house is a step back in history. Thoreau was a Harvard graduate and a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and changed the world with his book Walden. He lived in the small house for 2 years and thought and wrote about what it means to live a successful life.

It's rather silly to list this separately from Walden Pond since this replica is right next to the main parking lot of the Visitor's Center.

Of course it's worth a look and a quick photo stop.

This is a small replica of Thoreau’s cabin on Walden’s pond. It was interesting to see the small unassuming living environment where Thoreau’s greatest works were created.

Parking is a problem

Our plan was just a quick stop to see the recreation of Thoreau's house. It was closed due to covid. Our problem was with the parking lot. To pay to park was going to be $30. That seemed unbelievable but since we had out of state tags on our rental car that was the deal on the kiosk. No one was around for us to ask. We didn't pay that because we weren't there but a few minutes.

Tiny house from the past

This was a great little spot to visit. So interesting to see the reproduction of Thoreau's cottage. In a state park setting, so very natural and authentic looking. :)

Small in Size but Huge in Impact

My wife and I were there to see the entire Preserve and especially to experience the re-constructed 10 by 15 ft cabin where Thoreau stayed for two years. The cabin was simplicity itself. He built it with a little help from his friends. He went there to reflect on life and to grow some of his own food and study nature.

However, he wasn't a hermit. According to an excellent 2017 biography ("Henry David Thoreau A Life", by Laura Walls) and an author talk on youtube, he still had lots of contact with his Mother, Father, siblings, travelers, friends, railroad construction folks, and local hobos. When we were there, a re-enactor, who was very knowledgeable, held forward. Ask him a question, and he would answer you as Thoreau would have answered then. His performance added a lot to our experience. Don't miss it!

Amazing little place!

We enjoyed our visit here. However, walk across the street and along the lake to see where his home originally stood. It is very nicely preserved the way it has been done!

The message of simplicity comes across in this small cabin. Good re-creation of the actual cabin. Easy to get to with clear paths. Even though Thoreau didn't like "worn paths"..
