I am envious of those laid to rest - with their families! -in this beautiful place among so many illustrious people. A lovely cemetery in which to walk and pay respects to the Thoreaus, the Emersons, the Alcott's, the Hawthorns, and Daniel Chester French.

Beautiful historic cemetery lies on undulating hills in a wooded area. Most visitors head for Authors Ridge to see graves of Thoreau, Emerson, Alcott, and Hawthorne but there is much more. It's free of charge but best if you read history of Concord's notable figures beforehand.

If you are a book lover, do not skip going here. The Alcott's, the Hawthorne's, and the Thoreau's are all buried within feet of each other up on a ridge they've nicknamed Author's Corner!

Map is a little hard to follow but worth the walk around; very big with lots of names you would recognize

If you visit Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, then you must make your way over to Author’s Ridge which the final resting place of such literary greats as Emerson, Thoreau, Alcott and Hawthorne. It is a little bit of a steep climb up the ridge and the most difficult to find was Hawthorne whose grave is actually the first one you will pass. It was surreal to be able to pay my respects to such amazing writers who still “wow” us today.

Stopped in to find and visit Authors' Ridge, the final resting place of Emerson, Alcott, Hawthorne and Sidney. It was fun trying to locate each of their gravesites on a beautiful hilltop overlooking the rest of Sleepy Hollow cemetery. Felt like a treasure hunt and of course these writers and their incredible works are in fact part of our national treasures. Well worth the hour or so to visit.

I guess in order to have a true experience, one has to take a tour. Our experience was that we did not take a tour, just walked on our own. We asked for and received a map of historic Concord, then set out on a walk. The map showed the streets and locations of historic sites, but unfortunately it was not to scale and not very helpful in finding this cemetery. We found two cemeteries in Concord... neither the right one. We stopped at the visitor center downtown, however that was closed, so no help there. Where in the world is the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery? We walked all over but could not find it.

A beautiful day to explore this really historic place. We loved to discover the quartz headstone of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and a bit of history for our kids

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is a traditionally old New England style cemetery. There are large and ornate headstones everywhere. But what makes this place interesting, is that it has an "Author's Area" where Thoreau, Alcott, Emerson and Hawthorne are buried. All their families are buried with them. It is somber to think about how short the lives of some of these individuals were, some only living into their mid 30's. The cemetery is beautiful and certainly causes one to reflect upon the brevity of life and how all will end up one day in the same place: the grave. Still, a very interesting place to visit and thankful we got the chance to do so.

One of the best preserved early American cemeteries, this beautiful pristine cemetery is better known for "Author's Ridge." On Author's Ridge, you'll see the final resting places of Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau, Nathanial Hawthorne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, all within a short distance away from each other. There are many other notable sites here, but most come to pay homage to the greatest of authors in American Literature.
