I was on a Transcendentalist trip to Concord and visiting Sleepy Hollow Cemetery was on the top of my list of places to visit. The leaves were turning (early November) and it was so peaceful and beautiful there. It's a lovely cemetery and has some great history. I definitely recommend a visit if you are in town.

First, let me clarify my title with the words that this is a very very old cemetery, & it is probably very hard to skate that thin line between respect for the deceased and accessibility. That being said, there is no signage for the authors grave area except for stones with arrows & accessibility (steep terrain) is limited and narrow. No real parking. Gravesites for Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau.. very cool & worth the climb & search… yes you have to look around.. all graves pretty close together & on top of the hill..

Well, after probably driving the car on the walking path, we exited the first entrance and took the second and lucked out! We didn't want to pay for the guided tour and the only way we found the author's ridge was when we spotted the stone with Alcott, Emerson, Hawthorne and Thoreau that told us we were to walk up the ridge to where the graves were located. I was amazed that the families of those were all buried with them and no huge stone for the famous. Didn't stop the goosebumps seeing their headstones and looking at all the pens that had been thrown over the ring that protected the graves. It was one of the highlights of our trip and it was free!

My boyfriend and I went out on a guided tour yesterday. Our tour guide was Richard. He was the best. He is so friendly and very informative! He made the tour fun and enjoyable. Will definitely be looking into more tours in the future. And I highly recommend going on the Sleepy Hollow tour, it was a unique experience and I am glad we went.

I came here to visit the graves of Hawthorne, Thoreau, Alcott, and Emerson. For the literary types, this is like visiting Mecca. It was very emotional and spiritual. A beautiful, peaceful cemetery--much bigger than I expected. Full of history and significance.

Classic, lovely old cemetery done in a sprawling park style. The old epitaphs are fun to read but authors row is the real highlight. Graves of Alcott, Thoreau, Emerson, Hawthorn and more. Just amazing

I am envious of those laid to rest - with their families! -in this beautiful place among so many illustrious people. A lovely cemetery in which to walk and pay respects to the Thoreaus, the Emersons, the Alcott's, the Hawthorns, and Daniel Chester French.

Beautiful historic cemetery lies on undulating hills in a wooded area. Most visitors head for Authors Ridge to see graves of Thoreau, Emerson, Alcott, and Hawthorne but there is much more. It's free of charge but best if you read history of Concord's notable figures beforehand.

If you are a book lover, do not skip going here. The Alcott's, the Hawthorne's, and the Thoreau's are all buried within feet of each other up on a ridge they've nicknamed Author's Corner!

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is in the town of Concord, Massachuseets. Concord is about 50km west of Boston.
I think you could take a train from NYC to South Station in Boston, then take a commueter train from South Statiion to Concord. It would take most of a day. The distance from NYC to Boston or to Concord is about 359 km.
I think a bus would be a better choice than a train. There may be a bus from NYC directly to Concord, and it would probaby be faster.
I think you should allocate 3 days for the trip: two days for travel, and a day in Concord. You might manage it in two, but you would have very little time in Concord.
The Concord Inn in Concord is very nice. It is also fairly expensive. It is, however, within fairly easy walking distance of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and of downtown Concord. I think the bus may stop quite close to it as well.
If you do make the trip, I hope you enjoy it. Bonne chance!
Does the graveyard allow dogs?

I don't know whether it's "allowed," but it definitely seems inappropriate.
I would like to purchase a photo of the Melvin angel headstone as a gift for a Melvin descendant. Is this a possibilty? Thank you, Jo-Anne Baker

Mourning Victory, (AKA the Melvin Angel) is part of the Melvin Memorial near the central entrance to Concord's Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. There are several possible ways to get pictures of this monument. An internet search for Mourning Victory will give you many images of this memorial and the related carving in New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. You could inquire with the Town of Concord, Massachusetts about available pictures of this memorial. You could also ask the MET about pictures of their similar carving. Note that the work in the MET is reversed from the one in Concord and represents only the central figure, not the entire memorial.
