Unfortunately we were unable to visit the park thoroughly: we were making a fairly long transfer and had to do it in just one afternoon.
But what can I say: truly beautiful landscapes, wild as I like them. Despite the great heat (it wasn't a surprise, but it's still something to note) the stops to take photographs were countless.
Endless plains, sand dunes, Joshua Tree forests and direct contact with wild nature. All very beautiful.
I don't give full marks because if I give 5 to Bryce Canyon I can't also give 5 to Mojave.
Note:
- Make sure you have enough petrol as petrol stations are few and far between.
- Make sure you have enough to drink for the reason described above.
- Don't miss the Kelso Sand Dunes, which can also be photographed from the dirt road you approach (too hot and zero shade to reach them on foot in summer)
- If you love adventure and have a good 4x4 there are several tasty streets!
- Beautiful sunsets

This is really a hidden gem. It’s far out but reachable. It’s quiet but accessible. Tucked between I10 to the south and I15 to the north, this Preserve is a quiet and lovely natural gem. If you want to find some peace close by LV/LA/PHX routes but away from the city folks, this preserve is the place!

There’s actually a lot to see here. Google makes it sound like we reviewers are scraping the bottom of the barrel to find things to do! You will see no one else in the park except at the Dunes, the Lava Tube, and the Museum. Visit those places but also check out the Joshua Tree forest on Ivanpah road—it’s better than JTNP.

If you are traveling I40 this is a great place to check out for an afternoon or longer or as a destination all of its own. Most of the roads are accessible by sedan. Due the area’s topography, the roads will wash out regularly. Their website cannot be trusted for the condition of their paved or dirt roads so make sure you are prepared, drive slow, and have a backup plan, sense of humor, and adventuresome spirit!

Kelbaker Road goes to the Kelso Dunes, the Cinder Cones and Lava Tube, the Kelso Depot Museum, and more. It’s well maintained. There are boondocking spots for all comfort levels along this road and on the off shoots. Kelso Dunes has a large area for boondocking in a crowd and one single site. The Cinder Cones have lots of single boondocking sites. There are other boondocking sites on the more rugged, smaller roads if you are an overlander. All the sites are marked and have a metal fire ring.

Essex Road goes to the Hole in the Wall Campground and the road is also well maintained until just after the campground and then Black Canyon Road is closed northerly. There are off-shoots from the Essex Rd but they are hard to travel unless you are in a 4WD vehicle.

Lanfair Rd connects to Ivanpah Road and both are well maintained for 4wd with boondock spots. Less people, more wildlife. Amazing Joshua Tree forest at the northerly end.

You can also take Hwy 95 and then turn in west into the Preserve on the Mojave Road but it is more primitive. Mojave Road on the west side of the Preserve is in good condition for a 4WD vehicle.

The Aiken Mine Road will take you to the Lava Tube. The road is in good condition for 4wd vehicle, it is grated. The parking lot is small but there are large boondock spots nearby to park/camp relax within walking distance to the tube.

We have been to this Preserve 3 times in less than a year with our 27 ft class c and flat tow Jeep and will be back again for sure. Even though there is a severe lack of souvenir fridge magnets.

The Mojave National Preserve is the equivalent of a National Monument so there are many uses in this area including ranching and mining. We love NMs because there’s less people and more freedom. We do our part to keep these places awesomely open by trying to be respectful to the land as much as we can while enjoying it.

See my other reviews of the area: Kelso Dunes, Kelso Visitor Center, Lava Tube, Providence Mnt SRA, and more!

This place was great! We walked up to the dunes when it was pretty hot and it felt way hotter here. You could see the snake holes and slithering marks in the sand from when they had come out at night. It feels so remote it was remarkable. I was so excited to see a Joshua tree so I got a pic of one then we continued to drive and saw hundreds. Awesome place.

Went to see the guant Joshua Kala tree. Many giant Joshua trees in the area. Google has a location for the tree but there are no signs. Parking is a short distance after the tree. Note that there is no cellphone signal in the preserve. So better load all the directions into your phone or car GPS. Bring a map as you may easily get lost as the direction signs for the different attractions are poorly posted or non existent. Many roads are dirt and rough and also no gas, water or services. Check which park office is open before you go.

We loved this place. The josua trees are great. The road with all the dips is fun. Head up to hole in the wall for one of our favorite hikes ever, the rings hike.
Wish I had more time to explore

This was one of 4 National Parks that I visited, this one is a massive space but I found it to be the one had had the least to really visit.

The Kelso dunes were very impressive, you could easily spend a couple of hours in them, weather dependent.

Quite a lot of miles between the main points of the area but a really nice days drive around.

As always with an American Park, there are plenty of clean restrooms.

If you're in the area, you must go !

A definite must see especially when exploring the west coast. The rocks in the middle of nowhere where the most amazing things I ever seen. As with all my desert reviews if the summer weather isn't for you then definitely go at a different time of year.

We drove through the Preserve on our way to Las Vegas from LA (a little out of the way but worth it). The area is stunning with plenty of trails, relaxing views and very quiet. More to see then we expected. We expected just desert but it was full of different terrain and land cropping. A mush do
