My wife and I took the walking tour with Rich before we toured the museum. Besides learning about the buildings that had been used as hospitals during the Civil War, we also got to see the medical instruments and re-enactments of what the soldiers went through. The murals by Anatoly Shapiro were also very good.

Definitely a good place to visit during a heavy rainstorm while visiting Frederick.

I enjoyed this museum on a rainy Saturday. Is it a must do - no - but it was well done. It took about an hour to go through.

This small museum in downtown Frederick lays out the concepts of Civil War Medicine (along with one small exhibit tying that to modern battlefield care). It spreads over two floors and includes some civil war dioramas. You can probably manage the whole museum pretty well in less than 2 hours for a reasonable price. There's also a gift shop - though we didn't find anything we needed there (other than a tasty blackberry cream soda).

The museum is particularly focused on dispelling a few key myths (that civil war medics didn't use anesthesia, that amputations were done because of ignorance), on highlighting the history of women and Black Americans in civil war medicine, and on emphasizing the value of vaccines. It also liberally uses excerpts from civil war letters and diaries.

While its a small museum, it was a pleasant learning experience for awhile

I am not usually overjoyed about museums and history, but did enjoy reading about true heroes and what was learned medically through this horrible war. If you have a medical background, you'd particularly gain something from a visit.

What a fantastic museum. Everything I read said it was a small museum but the collection is pretty impressive. I learned so much and will definitely be back.

I love this museum! I visited and the amazing person up-front showed us where to start. All of the exhibits are close-ups and amazing life-size soldiers that accurately showcase what happened. Super close to Market District and near a parking garage and Carroll Creek!

An excellent, unique find! Purchase a ticket as you enter and receive a map / brochure. Start on the second floor. Follow a well-marked path down halls and through exhibition rooms. The exhibits are spot-on, and the light background noises of horses & wagons, distant sounds of battle & movement, add to the overall atmosphere. Small boxes on some walls contain interesting histories of specific soldiers. It was quite an educational experience. It’s hard to imagine but a full two-thirds of the soldiers who died during the Civil War died of disease, not bullets. And, although germ theory and antiseptic practices were unknown at the time, soldiers generally received good quality care. In fact, our modern medical practices were heavily influenced by the medical advancements made during the Civil War. Afterwards, treat yourself to a very good lunch at the nearby Sumittra Thai Cuisine restaurant, about a block away (12 E. Patrick Street).

I love finding and exploring museums that are out of the ordinary, and this was definitely one of them. I was surprised by all the information and artifacts in this museum. I learned a lot about medicine and medical practices during the Civil War. I'm grateful medicine and medical practices have vastly improved! This is an incredible place to visit.

This museum had a lot of interesting information about the medical practices during the Civil War. I learned a lot about the medical practices and the war itself. Spent 1-2 hours here.
