Well made and maintained Monument to an important historical figure. Definitely a quick visit but cool to see while walking around downtown.

outside the frederick county courthouse - you will find John Hanson standing in front of the entrance. easy to see and examine. Pretty good sculpture. Those who don';t know about him should read up on why he was the first President under the Articles.

It was shocking to learn that this man was our first president before our constitution was written when the term was just one year. It is a nice little statue. Well taken care of and in a place of prominence outside the courthouse. Not too far from Market Street.

Nice little statue of our 1st President. It sits in the middle of a courthouse square. I imagined the man would get a a little more honor than that. Most people don't know that there were 9 elected Presidents before good old George Washington. The area was clean and safe.

Hey nice statue and Memorial in front of the courthouse. It looks pretty nice. You can just drive by and take a peek. Or park and walk up to look at it closer.

This was a great find in front of the court house. There were some sketchy characters out front, so be ware, but it was so interesting to see his statue and learn about his life, thanks to a timeline on the side of his pedestal.

Following a most enjoyable lunch at The Orchard, Ben and Mrs Too walked the few blocks to the present day Frederick County court house. In the plaza fronting the building stands a statue of the statesman John Hanson, a native Marylander born in Charles County, and one of the most capable patriots of his time. Although not normally thought of as one of the founding fathers, he certainly was among the most politically gifted and respected of them. His unanimous election to serve as the first president of the nascent nation surely attests to the esteem in which he was held.
In the opinion of many, Ben included, to refer to Mr. Hanson as the first president of our country is not entirely accurate, though certainly not detrimental to his memory. He was president of a provisional government the principle function of which was to steer his country through the spastic fortunes of the American Revolution, then to arrange for a committee which would design and hammer out a complex document to become the Constitution of the United States of America under a new and truly democratic government whose leaders would be elected by its citizens directly, in the case of Congress and by a college of electors, respecting the chief executive. These delegates to the electoral college were also chosen by voting citizens. Thus George Washington was the first president elected by Americans as a group, which was, after all, the root concept of the new nation.
All that being said, the clear fact remains that this remarkable man has never even to this day been given credit in correct proportion to his accomplishments and the immense value of those deeds.

Poor John Hanson is almost forgotten in our history books, so kudos to Frederick for erecting this statute to remember the "first" president.
