Fascinating museum telling the story of the airfield built by the Americans which is still in use today. No real Greenland community here before World War 2 (and only a small community now). Built as one of the stopping points for US planes flying across the Atlantic during the war via Canada and then via Iceland to Scotland. Hundreds of Americans were based here with a big hospital, dance hall, church, ...

Most of the museum is devoted to the period when Narsarsuaq was a United States air base, which is not really something that particularly interests me, but there are some informative exhibits about the local area and its culture and natural history. Good selection of books and maps for sale and some good souvenir and gift items.

Amazing museum, not large, given location but absolutely riveting. It talks about a major World War Two American installation with some 4000 thousand people big runway and lots of planes. They have the back rooms set up to look like the forties.. if you come in by ship it is about a mile walk. But well worth it. Little gift shop with some local stuff, nice carvings and several little cafes close by. There seems to be a big hotel there by I did not get there

I would have loved to see this museum, but it was closed. Instead I went for a walk in the snowstorm down hospitalroad. There used to be a very big US military hospital (1000 beds). Unfortunately it burned in the early 80's. But there is an interesting history in Narsarsuaq. And you will probably find interesting stories and pictures in this museum. Hope it is open if you come to this place..

I really enjoyed browsing in this place. It's an "old-style" museum divided in two exibitions: the American Base and Norse in Greenland and North America.
The first exibition explains how the airport was built as part of an American base starting from 1941, it exposes it with many pictures, articles and objects from the base. Through the window you can look at the actual airport strip. Everything really interesting especially if you like to browse through the past and know the origins of places.
The section about Norse culture in Greenland and North America can be a bit redoundant if you already have all the information about Erik the Red, Leif the Lucky etc... anyway, reading the panels I discovered new things, like Vikings at the North Pole. As well all the Viking sites in the surroundings (proposed to Unesco), not just Brattahlid, home of Erik the Red, across the fjord.
Definetely worth a visit if you are in Narsarsuaq, especially if you use the airport, that is really close to the museum.
