The park itself in is good to go but the management sucks, I ordered a plaque for my 5x's great grandfather to be put on the civil war wall and a certificate. Almost a year later and many e mails with no contact I finally get some feed back, "sorry sir we were so backed up and we mailed your certificate 3 months ago". BS, never was it mailed, what an insult for trying to get my civil war grandfather on the wall. The director should be relieved of her duties, no respect or communication.

The museum and grounds provide a basic understanding the life of a civil war soldier as well as showing the area of the one of the last battles. Extensive exhbits and audio tour.

My wife and I visited the Park as tourists from the UK. We enjoy visiting the US and have a decent general knowledgeable of US history. We found the Park thoroughly interesting and engaging.
First, the museum is well curated. All the different exhibits and activities are placed in their proper context so that they make sense to generalist visitors. Everything is clearly explained.
The museum provides comprehensive explanation of the background to the Civil War. For people like us who were also visiting some of the Civil War battle sites that are managed by the NPS, this was a helpful complement.
The museum includes a big focus on the lived experience of the War from the perspective of the ordinary soldier. The exhibits explore the perspective from both sides and respect the experiences of both Northern and Confederate troops.
You can walk the Breakthrough Trail, which includes many of the original earthworks from the Breakthrough battle towards the end of the War. It helps you to appreciate the incredible courage that must have been required of attacking troops trying to overrun well dug in defenders, both at this location and the countless others throughout the Civil War.
Overall, there is a lot do to here. We were at the Park for about 3-4 hours. That is a good length of time to plan to stay, although you could stay longer - we didn't cover everything.

We took the Seven Days Campaign tour and it was great! Des (our guide) asked us what we were most interested in, and it was no problem to tweak the itinerary to include City Point and The Crater. Highly recommended, and for a full day tour the price ($225) was very reasonable. The park itself was closed the day we visited, but my impression is that it is more geared for middle school kids and groups.

This is simply a wonderful place, but I had a little difficulty finding it using Google Maps. Google kept putting me to the education center which, being a Sunday, wasn't open so no one could tell me where I was supposed to go. I finally found the main entrance which turned out to be just down the street from where Google had me turn. Many of the paths and courtyards of the buildings are thick gravel, I'm not sure how well that would work for someone in a wheelchair.

This is one of the very best historical museums I have ever visited. It provides a number of experiences for the one ticket, but essentially it gives a fascinating insight into plantation life in ante-bellum Virginia and an even deeper insight into the 'forgotten' campaign that ended the US Civil War. The plantation 'museum' centres on the original house of the Boisseau family, whose descendants now run the museum. Around the house are faithfully restored buildings from the kitchen and laundry to the barns and tobacco-curing buildings. There is a short but brilliant film on the different attitudes to slavery in the 1850s. From there one moves to the reconstructed Confederate defence lines which give an accurate idea of Lee's defensive system that held up Grant's armies for months. Into the Battlefield museum, and warmly greeted by Carl, who explains important information and sets up the essential video (10 minutes only). Then out to the actual battlefield where the breakthrough occurred, and the original defences are still in place. Amazing!
Inside the main museum at the entrance is the Museum of the Soldiers. You can 'pick up' one soldier and follow his war experience through the museum. There's a brilliant depiction of the breakthrough with simulated gunfire whistling past your ear.
Give at least two hours for this whole experience - although it can last even longer.

This park was amazing for the history fan and actually kept my kids satisfied. They normally complain about “boring” history. In the museum there’s a tour you can take based on a soldier you pick. My kids loved that exhibit which includes awesome artifacts. Then on the exterior portion there’s a large area with historical buildings, mock earthworks and soldier area with excellent interpreters there to demonstrate camp life and rifle firing. Then of course the most magnificent historical fortifications I think I’ve ever seen. Well preserved and standing tall. You really get the sense of being in a fortified location during war. The spot is also historic for the breakthrough point during Grants siege of Petersburg. This is a must go for all ages but especially for history buffs. You will really enjoy it.

The museums are interactive and provide a thorough look at the crucial battle that occurred on these grounds. Reconstructed earthworks, soldiers camp and original home that was used as Confederate headquarters. Lots of walking trails. Good for families.

This museum makes you feel part of the civil war soldier's personal living conditions, motivations, fears, emotions, challenges and much more. The audio and visual effects and very well done. I can't say enough good things about the experience. All very interesting and educational. It will stir your soul. Don't miss going to this place.
