We spent most of our visit in the Earth history part of the museum, full of fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric life. Each section has signs that explain how those fossils fit into the development of life. The signs have a good balance between being long enough to give you a good idea of what's in the exhibit and being short enough that you don't feel flooded with more details than you can take in. The signs are in both English and Spanish.

As you walk from room to room, you retrace the history of life on Earth from earliest times to the geologically recent. In the last room, be sure to look up, to see the saber-tooth cat preparing to pounce!

The museum has other exhibits, but the history of life was what we concentrated on.

On the day that we visited, museum staff had telescopes set up outside so that we could look at the Sun. Also, a team from NASA had unrolled a large photo-map of the Moon on the floor of an upstairs room. All of us who visited that day could become "Moon walkers"!

The walk through time exhibit, that winds its way around the museum, detailing earth's geologic history and the appearance of life and biologic changes was unusually interesting. We also saw an IMAX movie about an Everest expedition that was very good, although those in our group had seen other movies about Everest previously.

When I think of a natural history museum, I think of awesome displays of rare & cool stuff. I guess I am spoiled by going to the Smithsonian. Wasn't expecting that big for $8 each, but the place is small and nearly everything was geared towards little children like kids "science centers' that are already everywhere. That was disappointing, as was the amount of unused open space without exhibits. The dinosaur bones were cool and the whole thing can be done under an hour unless you pay extra for the planetarium or theatre or have kids under 10.

My friend and I were in Albuquerque last month and had a delightful visit at the New Mexico Natural History Museum!

Michael was the guard/docent we met after we entered the museum, and he was extremely helpful and informative. He told us about Bella, the interactive dinosaur (actually the Bisti Beast, Bistahieversor Sealeyi) in the central atrium, and how to navigate the galleries if we wished to take the Walk Through Time (Timetracks). It's a truly brilliant way to organize a museum! We started on the upper floor, with the Big Bang, and progressed through the origin of life, migration of organisms from the sea to the land, rise of the dinosaurs, the asteroid that triggered the mass extinction, and the rise of the mammals, to present-day environments and challenges.

All the exhibits were very informative and user-friendly; in addition, there were plenty of interactive stations for younger visitors to learn more about the content in the exhibits.

We spent about 90 minutes touring the Walk Through Time and could easily have stayed longer if we'd visited the other galleries. (We unfortunately had an engagement in the afternoon and had to leave.) But even a short visit was enchanting, and we absolutely enjoyed ourselves!

Wonderfully prepared displays with good information, however the guidance on how to follow the flow of the exhibits is extremely poor. We ended up going through several in reverse because of this.

Awesome museum! Really impressive exhibits of dinosaurs. Fun robotic T. rex that captures kids’ attention. Fun simulation where it looks like Dino’s are running at you.

We recently toured this museum while visiting Albuquerque as part of a road trip from our home in southeastern PA. We love museums, especially history and natural science, and have visited quite a number of them. This museum was one of the best we’ve been to in regards to the design of its natural history narrative.

It was recommended by the museum greeter that before we view the “journey through time” exhibits, we start with the special exhibit called “Chocolate” that begins on the first floor and finishes on the second floor, where the Walk Through Time begins. The Chocolate exhibit was very interesting, depicting the history of chocolate as a food item since the beginning of its global cultivation; it really takes you beyond Hershey and Swiss Miss! We learned a lot from the displays!

The “journey through time” exhibits were very creative and well laid out, ramping down from the top floor in chronological order (supposedly) from the origins of our world. The content was the usual secular interpretation, presenting everything as hard fact when, in truth, depicting anything that far in the past can only be speculative (and certainly not “scientific”). There were lots of dinosaur skeletons, fossils, etc., as well a nice collection of good-sized minerals and an interesting display of shells, among other features. The museum lobby contains an animatronic dinosaur that the onlookers found quite entertaining.

In all, we spent just over one hour at this nice-sized museum. The café area of the gift shop is currently closed, but food is available at nearby Old Town Albuquerque. There was plentiful free onsite parking.

On a cold cloudy day, we decided to visit. Well worth the stop and the price was perfect! We spent a couple hours here which was way longer than we expected.
