With the likes of Grand Canyon's North Rim, Horseshoe Bend, and all the other major sites in the area, Pipe Spring doesn't float (bad pun not initially intended) to the top of any lists. It is however a great stop. Pipe Spring's story is extremely well told and the exhibits tie it all together quite well. The short movie in the visitor center is excellent and really brings the buildings, the exhibits and the story together.

Stopped on our way to a Slot Canyon Tour. The visitor center was very clean and the Ranger was very informative and nice. We toured the historic site and our granddaughter got a Junior Ranger Badge. Worth the stop.

Stopped here to take a break from the road and enjoyed walking the museum and historic site for an hour. Small gift store and clean restrooms. Interesting history with this site. The 'castle' is only open at certain times but had some interesting rooms. The water pipe is still in operation.

The visitor center is outstanding and be sure to watch the orientation video. The site is small with nothing particularly stunning to see, but the story behind this place is complex and fascinating. This is worth a stop for anyone remotely interested in the history of the LDS church and its interaction with the federal government, the Paiute Indians, and the Navajos.

Ancentral Puebloans, the Kaibab Paiute Indians and the Mormon ranchers all settled here at various times throughout history. There is a wonderful 25 minute movie explaining who lived here, and when, and an interesting museum in the visitor’s center. We also wandered the grounds and visited the other historic buildings. A ranger gave us a guided tour of historic Winsor Castle, a fortified ranch house, which was also headquarters for a Mormon tithing ranch. We also hiked the 1/2 mile long Ridge Trail that offered great views from the top.

We stopped here one afternoon with our kids (ages 10-15). Such an interesting little museum and movie. The kids loved feeding the mule and seeing the steer. It's a great glimpse into the relationship between the native people of this area and the Mormon settlers. Well worth the hour stop!

My friend and I ended up here because we took a wrong turn and decided to just roll with it. We were quite pleased with our random visit.

We had no idea what Pipe Springs was so we were surprised to find it was a fort and recreated buildings. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The guide in the fort knew all the answers to the random questions and I asked and it was fun to chat with her.

The fort is nicely preserved and there are some gorgeous pieces of old furniture. There’s a beautiful trunk with a painting under the lid that I was especially impressed with.

We also really loved looking at the giant bull they keep on the property. He was very cool, though a little camera shy as he refused to give as anything more than a side profile.

All-in-all it was a pleasant experience and if you’re in the area I highly recommend it. Takes about an hour to go through.

On a previous trip through the area, we had noticed that there’s a National Monument west of the main road between the National Parks. But just didn’t have the time to run by it. Today, we made a point of visiting Pipe Spring National Monument. Glad we did. Water is the life-blood out here (really everywhere). At Pipe Spring there’s a robust spring. The Southern Paiute Native Americans frequently passed and used the spring and the wild food nearby. In their expansion, Mormon settlers found the spring and build a ranch here. They channeled and used the water for growing plants and watering cattle. They built quite an enclosure here. We were able to go to the enclosure where a volunteer Ranger provided an interpretative talk about the compound.

Gradually the cattle ate up the natural foods and the Paiutes suffered greatly diminishing in number. It is an age-old conflict of the West – settlers cultivating the land and bringing in grazing animals to the detriment of the Native Americans. Reading the stories, there appears to be no animosity between the settlers and the Natives. It’s just that the settlers didn’t even consider the Natives in their actions and either passively or actively pushed the Native Americans off of land that had been historically their homelands. Sad story. The US Government has entered the picture, purchasing Pipe Spring and allocating the water. The Paiute appear to have stabilized in the area. Good visit. Wished we had spent more time there. Good video explaining the history and the tensions between settlers and Native Americans.
