It was 9-years since our last visit & the park was just as wonderful. We hiked a few trails, which was great, although very hot (still over 100, as they were having a heat wave at the time). You should carry lots of water & wear sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, & carry snacks any time you hike there. Go as early as possible too. There is a nice, small visitor center. Lots of great photo ops everywhere you look.

A must see when visiting Tucson. Both East and West were great! Take time for a hike, or drive the loop roads. Loop in the west park is a dirt road but well maintained. That road is only open during daylight hours.

The Saguaro National Park has two parts, on the west and east sides of Tucson. We visited the eastern part late on a Wedsnesday afternoon. Besides the loop road (reviewed separately), there wasn't much to see; just typical desert landscape with various types of cactus plants. A nice thing about the east part is it's at elevation over Tucson and so well-situated for watching the sun set.

We have been to A LOT of National Parks, have hiked many miles in these parks, and I have to say the trails in this park are the best marked trails we have ever seen. I was very thankful for this. There have been many trails that you reach a point that you’re not sure which way to go and if you are still on your original path or have somehow crossed over to a longer more strenuous path. These paths were well marked. There are also a lot of information along the way. Very informative and educational.

Amazing experience. I learned so much about the desert and the life in it. A must see when in town. Make sure to catch the movie in the theater at the back of the gift shop.

Definitely worth visiting especially if you like cacti!
This place is not far out of Tucson and has a great visitors centre with information, shop and d ‘restroom’ facilities

Gorgeous views and ability to stop along the way at spectacular vistas. We did the driving loop because it was too hot to do anything else.

Incredible cacti that take place on either side of the road, we are in another atmosphere, which is very exotic!

We went very early in the morning to potentially avoid intense, but fortunately it was still quite warm.
The drive was beautiful and filled, and lots of cactus of all species . I was fortunate enough to see several woodpeckers, a cactus wren, some butterflies, and several small lizards.
There were several people biking, and walking through the park so just be aware of your surroundings. Make sure that you are giving them enough room.
Visitor center was also grade and had a little bit of an exhibit plus as usual a wonderful park film.

Saguaro national park is as you can imagine filled with all the different types of cactus you could ever wish to see. I do think $25 is a bit much though. There is a good visitor centre near the entrance. We were there around 4pm and we saw no one else on the 9 mile loop scenic drive. In the summer I think the ranger stop manning the pay station on the drive around 4.30. So after that you might get in for free. Lots of walks but make sure you wear a hat and have plenty of water. It is very very hot.

Thinking about an end of year trip around Christmas to New Year. Active family, college age kids. Is the temperature reasonable for hiking, horseback riding.etc. Weather history seems to indicate 50s-60s during the day but I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually visited then. Thanks!

We are driving through on Interstate 10 with some minor flexibility in our schedule. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to drive to the park from the interstate?

The interstate goes right through Tucson and the NP has both a west and an east section. Either one is only about 30 to 45 min. max from the highway to the visitor center in each section Try putting in your map app on a smart phone - Tucson to the Red Hills Visitor Center (West part of the NP). You'll get a good number that is likely in that range.

The park has paved roads, and is simple to drive through and park in many locations. We walked along a couple of trails, and had great views everywhere. Maps are available at the Visitor's Center, and are easy to follow.

We will be visiting this national park this summer- was wondering can you do the east and west side in the same day- we will not have much time- will be driving back to Florida from california and wanted to stop here on our way home- thanks

I agree with the other answer of doing just one side a day. It depends on if you’re driving through it or stopping and hiking . If you just want to check them off a list then yes you could do them both

I think you can drive it any day, but the visitor center is closed on Christmas.

How long is the Park (west) open and does it have a loop to drive? We are flying in around 3pm renting a car. Since we only have 3 nights we plan on driving right on arrival to the park before we go check in at Hotel.
The next 2 days are already full so really our only chance.

I answered but I don't know if it went thru. We drove our 28 foot motor home with no problems. Some of the pull offs where to small but some had actual parking area. I think they said 30 was max but give them a call. Its nice.
