Scott’s Bluff is one of those treasures that are off the radar for most people. My hobby is geology, so I wanted to go there. Not only that, Scott’s Bluff was an important stop on the Oregon Trail for settlers going west. most people probably have seen it in western movie..
So my wife and I decided to go see it this on our way to the Black Hills. Scotts Bluff is an impressive large outcropping of rock sticking right out of the Great Plains. As you approach the national park there, you are riding on the old Oregon Trail. We were surprised how nice the national park was. There is a road that you can take that climbs up the Bluff. The roads winds its way through three tunnels to a parking area near the top of the Bluff. There is an overlook that is about a quarter of a mile from the parking area which offers great views of the Great Plains or Scotts Bluff itself. There are numerous trails that are around the top of the bluff. There were trails that went down along Scott Bluff as well.. We didn’t do the trail, but we certainly enjoyed the overlook.
Most of the people who were using the parking area were walking on all the trails. We were on our way to the Black Hills today so we didn’t take the trails. We headed back down, but we really didn’t have time to do the visitor center. If you are in Western Nebraska or even Cheyenne, I highly recommend you do a trip over to Scott’s Bluff.

Fine little national monument with both history and nature lessons to teach.
The visitor center and museum do a good job teaching the history of the bluffs and the Oregon Trail in this area, with both exhibits and a short orientation video. There are also a decent gift shop and flush toilets.
The road to the top is quick, if a bit hair raising in places. Once there, one can find some short trails to different scenic overlooks. There are also some trails, short and long, that take off from the visitor center. It can be pretty hot, so having water along is recommended.
We did the basics of the place in about an hour or so; you could easily take 2-3x that long. The monument is fee-free.

This place is amazing!! The views Ali g the Old Oregon trail to get there into the history of the museum with the video was so informative. We didn't have much time but it was so worth it. To learn how courageous and brave the people of that time were to do what they did.
The junior ranger activities there were informative and the kids were engaged. You definitely need to stop by. The rangers were so friendly and knowledgeable.

Friends and I drove to the summit arriving at about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. We had just enough time to get to the top and take a look around while snapping some photos before we descended to the visitors center. Friends took in the informational video and explored the exhibits while I did some shopping.

We were camping in the area and stopped early one morning before the park opened to hike to the top and take in the views. We hiked Saddle Rick Trail up to the top - there were some inclines and switchbacks but it wasn’t an over tough trail if you are an avid hiker and take your time. The views all along the way were amazing! Watch for wildlife -we saw big horn sheep and deer, and a gentleman we met coming down warned us of a rattlesnake he spotted on the trail ahead. At the top we added the north and south overlook trails - views in each were so different and beautiful! Then we decided to walk back down a n the roadway because it was closed and the views again were very different. At the bottom we went in the Oregon Wagon Trail and the history of the trail and the pony express along with the views were wonderful. The trail is baby ally flat and much easier than the saddle rock trail. You can drive the road when the park is open and hike the short overlook hikes at the top for the views without the incline hike with switch backs. This area and hikes was a favorite!

There are 2 ways to reach the top of the monument. One way is to climb the 1.6 mile Saddle Rock Trail and the other is to drive the 1.6 mile summit Road. With temps in the 90s, we opted for the scenic drive. There are many sharp curves and 3 tunnels along the way. At the top is parking. We decided to walk the short North Overlook Trail which provided us with rewarding views. Benches are available. The surrounding land was once the same height as the top of the bluff but erosion is responsible for the land as it is now. At the visitor center is a museum which focuses on the bluff and how it provided a mile post to settlers on their journey westward.

The beauty of Scott's Bluff and the history of the Oregon Trail were fantastic. Being able to see remnants of the actual trail was incredible. The park was nicely maintained and parking (even with a 40' DP towing) was not an issue.

Its free to visit Scotts Bluff national monument. There is a good visitor centre and a 1 and half mile scenic drive to the summit. The bluffs were a major landmark for navigation on the Oregon & California overland trail for the settlers. Some good views from the top and also lots of hikes.

Rather than returning back on I-90 to Minnesota after a trip to the Black Hills area we decided to drop down into Nebraska to see some nearby attractions before making our way home. We spent almost a full day in Scotts Bluff, enjoying the hikes of the North and South Overlooks after driving to the top, and the Oregon Trail Pathway and Prairie View Trail, both near the visitor center. It was a bit warm and we had our little dog with us, so we didn't attempt the Saddle Rock Trail to the top of the bluff. The rangers were very helpful and the visitor center is very nice, but lacking a little in the gift shop. The picnic area in the shade near the visitor center is also very nice. I highly recommend stopping in if you are in the area, or even making a detour to enjoy the monument.
All the trails are dog friendly.

I always wanted to go to Scottsbluff since my younger years. I think I learned about it in my geology class in college, but I remember watching western movies talking aboutScotts Bluff.
The National park here is a hidden treasure. When we were here in June, it was not crowded at all. There is a well maintained road up to the top of the bluff. There are even a couple of a short tunnels. There are plenty of trails around the top of the bluff from the parking area. Take some time to walk on these trails to the overlooks. There are some trail to the base of Scott’s bluff, but most of the trail worked their way around the top for great views or opportunity for a great photograph. In order to get to the park, you get to drive down the old Oregon Trail.(this is paved Road now.)
This place is well worth a visit!

Apparently they discontinued the entry fee this year. I talked to a local who hadn't been to the monument in 30 years, but decided to come because there was no fee!

My daughter & I have only time for a quick visit. We want to see the short film & get a picture by a covered wagon & would like to drive up to see the view. How long would you say it would take us to do that?
Thanks
撰写日期:2019年1月9日
The covered wagon is right along the road. The entire visit shouldn't take more than 2 hours
撰写日期:2019年5月21日
We're getting there after the visitor center closes. Will we be able to see anything? By car?
撰写日期:2018年6月20日
There is a small exhibit outside of the visitor center, with a paved walking path. You should also be able to drive up to the top of the bluff. Check their webpage on NPS.gov for basic info.

As previously stated the drive up the road from the Visitor Center to the top is 5 to 10 minutes depending on how fast you drive. It is better to take it slow and enjoy the views going up. Plus the road has curves and tunnels so slower is better for driver safety. The pathway up is not alongside the road but rather takes a completely different route. The views from the pathway make it worth the walk but give yourself plenty of time, maybe 45 minutes to 1 hour going up and 30 minutes coming back down. This is a natural environment so there are rattlesnakes but a watchful eye should be enough to keep you safe. Just stay on the pathway and don't wander off in the grass. The Visitor Center will take anywhere form 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on what you want to do and see. Also, once on top there are several trails to explore so give yourself time to enjoy the different views. All in all a very worthwhile stop and place to visit.

I am planning our Oregon Trail trip and would like to know how long to allow for our visit to Scotts Bluff NM. We obviously have a long trip planned and need to keep moving but want to spend a reasonable amount of time there. Thank you!

I would plan on two to three hours. There is a nice video in the visitor center. We also drove to the top of the bluff to view the surrounding countryside. I would also walk about a quarter mile to the west for a spectacular view of the pass. The land west of the pass gives a good perspective of the trail. Enjoy, a very special place.

The number for the Scottsbluff National Monument is not 436-9700. Their true phone number is 308-436-4340. I have no idea why Barb put that phone number, it is incorrect. I contacted the Scottsbluff National Monument and got the real phone number, and it is the one I have posted :^)

Hi.
I am sorry that incorrect information has been given, but this is what I found on the website for this attraction. I would never knowingly post inaccurate information, and I suspect that Barb got her info from the same place.
My apologies. :)
