This house is one of the oldest houses in Newport and if you get a chance to see it, you will not regret it. This house is not open on Sunday morning, but we came back and checked it out after it opened later. Don't miss it.

There was a Newport before the Gilded Age and even before the Revolutionary War. This is Newport's oldest surviving home and you come here to hear the intriguing story of old Newport.
Our guide really painted a picture of Newport before 1776. I was fascinated to see a small closet where the slaves prayed. Very historic visit!

In my fascination with Newport’s Gilded Age mansions, I had overlooked the many other facets of the city’s history until we heard of tours offered through the Newport Historical Society. They can be booked, and leave from, the Society’s museum and gift shop in Brick Market at 127 Thames Street.
My husband and I decided to take two, back-to-back, one-hour tours of two colonial structures, at $8 per person, per tour, so $32 all together. We arranged to meet the guide, Jenna, who turned out to be both lovely and knowledgeable, in an hour’s time. We whiled it away at the excellent museum upstairs. By the way, the building has a small but convenient bathroom and it makes for a cool respite on a hot summer day.
Our first stop, about a three-block walk from the Brick Market, was the Old Colony House. Our second was the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, only a block away. Built in 1697, it is considered the oldest surviving house in Newport. It’s an almost plain, but elegant, brick-red, wooden building that began life as two rooms on either side of a shared fireplace and grew over the centuries into its present two-story configuration. Restorers chose not to strand it in a single period but to highlight evolving architectural trends and lifestyles, admirably communicated by our guide. The 1720s kitchen is intact and an upstairs bedroom mirrors its 17th-century décor.
Between the two structures and Jenna’s amazing store of knowledge, we got a very good education on Newport’s roots along with a lot of architectural and cultural tidbits. We enjoyed it immensely. And, steeped as we already were in the past, we were able to continue total immersion with lunch at the nearby White Horse Tavern (1673).
These truly are worthwhile landmarks and invaluable background to round out any visit to Newport. Bravo to the Newport Historical Society for making this and so many other tours possible!
