lucky to have a visit before it closed.
we had visited the honolulu museum of art and learned about it's satellite museum at spalding house. and it's free shuttle. so came along here after a too short visit at the amazing HOMA. it was closing that weekend, and up for sale. we were told it was too isolated and didn't receive enough of a crowd to keep it going. also in a residential area and therefore couldn't put on certain events. on a beautiful piece of property. trees are pruned to frame a view of diamond head. the garden dates back to the early 1940's. i shudder to think of what will become of this lovely property with the sale. I'm not a fan of abstract/contemporary art so we made short of the visit inside and i enjoyed being out in the garden. the building was originally built for anna rice cooke, the founder of the HOMA and became part of HOMA in 1988. i was very happy that we had the opportunity to see this place before it closed. another lovely spot in beautiful hawaii.

Museum Now Closed
We visited and had lunch at the museum during it's last week of operation. The property and views were wonderful, but the property is apparently being put up for sale and it is now closed.

Gorgeous garden
On one of my daily hikes in Makiki Heights I came across this museum in the most unexpected place.

It was early in the morning and although the the museum was not open yet the gates were open and I decided to walk through for a peak. The garden had a number of beautiful sculptures and a peak through the trees of Waikiki skyline.

On another hike I fortunate to be there on a free admission day. Small but beautiful space with some great works of art.

Contemporary art in the hills
2019年5月 • 独自旅游
Spalding is the contemporary art outpost of the Honolulu Museum of Art. It's located in a hillside residential neighbourhood but is easily accessible by car, bus or - even better - the free shuttle bus from the HOMA. I took the shuttle and one of the gallery staff kindly offered to give us an informal tour of the galleries and garden. It was really special!

If I'd had more time, I would have explored more of the garden. So I recommend spending at least an hour on that alone.

The home is beautiful, the gardens are outstanding, the collection of contemporary art is small but enough to make a visit worthwhile, there is a cafe onsite which looked quite popular

Ideal place for an unforgettable lunch

I visited The Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House in a beautiful October afternoon. The drive was interesting itself because the Spalding House is located in Makiki Heights that is an old and wealthy neighborhood with beautiful estates. I am not an expert in modern art, but you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy an incredible garden that overlooks Diamond Head and Honolulu, not to mention some really amazing garden sculptures. A café with delouses food makes Spalding House an ideal place for an unforgettable lunch in Honolulu.

Favorite picnic location, when sun-kissed skin needs break from beach!

No need to have a food basket or blanket prepared, place your picnic order in the Museum cafe, and find your spot on the lawn. Enjoy the hillside breezes under the shade of the massive trees. Gorgeous view, lush shaded garden to walk through, and small peaceful museum to explore. No crowds so conversations are private. Great "date" spot. BYOB. Quick drive from Waikiki, (3 miles) up the hillside. Give your pink skin a break from the midday sun while incorporating a little culture into your vacation, or staycation for that matter. Lots of space for little ones to run and roll down grass hill a bonus! Check the Museum website for free entrance days, offered every month.

Private Residence Turned Museum
2018年5月 • 家庭
I noticed the sign for this museum on my way out of our hike on Pauoa Flats. I didn't realize that this one was located on Makiki Heights. I always assumed that it was downtown somewhere, but the main museum is downtown and this musuem is nestled at the bottom of Tantalus.

Sunday was too windy for a beach day so I suggested to my husband we take the kids there. First, I did not realize it was Family Sunday! Every 3rd Sunday of the month, admission is free! Plus, there are several kid activities going on. This is an absolute gorgeous property. It used to be a private residence turned museum. I could only imagine what it was like as a home. It consists of 2 buildings, main house and guest house (?) and it has a huge backyard, that is a big hill that leads you to a beautiful garden with views of HNL and Diamond Head! There are several sculptures throughout the property for you to enjoy. There is a pool between the 2 buildings (so watch your littles, it's not gated).

They had a craft going on in a room right by the entrance. On our visit, it was canvas bags that the kids could custom with iron-on vinyl paper and letters. One of the guys working there told me that they do not ever repeat a craft so you will never do the same thing twice! Then we went down the stairs around the side of the building where they were having story time right on the lawn of the Cafe. Our kids sat and listened while my husband and I grabbed a table behind them. We just got a snack and a drink, something small enough to last us the story. It was SO GOOD (I'll do a separate review).

After story time, we ventured around the garden, walked up to the guest house and checked out the exhibit there. Walked around the area behind the pool on the upper level. It had so many nooks and crannies. Take your time to walk and around and look, there are so many nooks and crannies there! So much to explore!

Parking - they have their own parking lot on their property. A security guard came out and told us which space to park.

Service - Everyone there was super nice and courteous!

Vibe - Beauty everywhere from the art exhibits, to the property and all the flowers and plants that grow there. The backyard is such a relaxing place too. There are huge monkey pod trees that provide shade!

Kid-Friendly - I would definitely recommend going on the Family Sundays like we did if you have kids. These days cater more to the keiki!

Situated high above Waikiki in a nice residential neighbourhood

In our many trips to Hawaii we have never before been to this attraction. It was well worth the time spent if for nothing more than the great view of Honolulu and Diamond head from above.
The very large garden area with stone steps and pathways through the plants and trees reminded us of prestigious gardens in past times. Artwork was present in the garden and the galleries but nature took precedent over all. There was a rectangular pool gone green with algae but you good imagine past residents taking a swim while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
One building with a background of opera music was hard to understand why it is now a childrens play area, with the young squeals overtaking the music. Perhaps more so today being the third Sunday of the month with free admission.
On family day, third Sunday, there is a bus provided from the Honolulu museum of art. This bus winds up the steep hill once an hour.
Parking is provided at the site if you have your own car or The Bus stops right at the entrance. There is an onsite lunch restaurant where youcan enjoy a light meal with a view.
You could easily spend an afternoon walking the pathways and enjoying the artwork.
