We asked the owner if we could organize a private screening and they said to go buy the CD of Amazon and go party at someone's house. Hello, if I had somewhere to show the movie why would I be asking to rent out their theater for the showing?
This was super rude considering I told her we weren't interested in partying, just wanted to watch the movie and leave.

Whenever we are in HNL, we always check on their movie offerings.
Recently, we were only in town for one week but we still made it to one Argentinian/Spanish film. It was also great to hear Jenny's voice when we called from TUS to reserve our seats!
It is truly a Local GEM for those of us who love movies...even if we sometimes have to make two transfers on The Bus to get there!

A small stuffy space with a screen and about 20 recliners: That's Honolulu's Movie Museum. Why does it have such a devoted clientele and why does it sell out regularly? Because the owner, Dwight Damon, and his loyal sidekick, Joanne Fujita, search out and offer up a wide range of great films from around the world, charge $5 per person to view them, and reserve a seat for you for the screening. There are great restaurants around the same parking lot for before or after eats. Get on a mailing list to receive their monthly calendars.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I watched zootopia in this one of a kind movie theatre on a recent visit to Oahu and would throughly recommend it. The movie theatre is small with only 19 leather recliners and so phoning to reserve seats is recommended. The theatre is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday's so pick your time carefully. The theatre shows quite a lot of foreign language films as well as the occasional children's film. Tickets are $5 for non members and therefore reasonably priced. Food is allowed and some people were eating hamburgers. We would definitely recommend for a non mainstream movie watching experience.

Located in Honolulu's Kaimuki, hard go find but worth the effort. Call head to get directions for the site and nearby parking...and make reservations, there are only 19 seats....but what seats they are! Leather fold outs you'd expect in a wealthy person's den. The screen is small but adequate for the room and the sound is fantastic. An obvious movie expert chooses the films offered. Only inconvenience are the restrooms located in another building and require a key from the desk and the rude ticket taker that has "issues" of some kind. Ignore these and dont miss the opportunity to see some very unusual films.

The Movie Museum occupies a rectangular space - 1/3 of which is a well-organized library of movies, while the other 2/3 of the space is the movie theatre. There are about 26 comfy recliners; and, when you call to reserve a seat(s), you're asked your preference of which seat. You can bring food in; and, there are no commercials/previews. A variety of foreign, new, and old movies are shown. Non-members pay $5 to watch a movie; and, members pay $4. Members ($25/year) receive monthly emails containing the schedule and great synopses of all the films. The movies are also advertised in the newspaper. Astonishingly enough, the owner and his assistant remember all the members' names; and, when his fruit trees are producing, they give customers some of the fruit (lychee, mango). I joined the Museum because I wanted to borrow an old movie about a talking horse in the Korean War. The Movie Museum was the only place in Honolulu that had it. To answer the "What sort of visit was this?" I can check off everything but families with young children.
