Eu creio que o endereço deva estar errado aqui no TripAdvisor ou o Heritage Center fechou neste endereço. Ao visitar a igreja St.Augustine by-the-sea havia uma placa solicitando que os fiéis contribuíssem para a construção do novo museu Damien, que será construído na própria área da igreja. Uma pena, queria muito ter conhecido.

Found this here on Trip Advisor. Just one block from my hotel. Very well done museum. Being from Louisiana, the location of another leper colony, I was curious how this history would be presented. Very week done. No glossing over of the general ignorance that lead to formation of the colonies. A great deal,of dignity and respect given to the patients and caregivers.

This little museum tells the history of early Catholic missionaries who came to Hawaii. It is kindly run and there is a nice gift shop. Make time for a visit.

Hawaii is seen as a great holiday destination and it is. However the story of Hawaii is also one of cultures colliding and joys and sadness. One of the forgotten sides is the story of how the Catholic Church stepped arrived to help the many Hawaiians, especially the native islanders who had no immunity to leprosy in the 19th Century. This Museum on the Waikiki playground strip, by the St Augustine's RC Church is a great introduction to this story.
