Hi Granny Gourmet, I'm awfully surprised you didn't enjoy the Pioneer Museum in Hot Springs, SD. Perhaps you are used to larger museums that have a good deal of funding. This museum is run entirely on admissions. It hires a seasonal manager and a custodian, and all others, including the board members, are volunteers who receive nothing for their time nor mileage. The board president lives 40 miles from Hot Springs, another board member lives 25 miles out and the balance are from right around Hot Springs. Two very active grant writers have brought in thousands of dollars for re-tuckpointing the building's exterior ($100,000) over four years; new lighting throughout is in progress; rooms are being professionally painted; an archive room was completed; volunteers scan photos and mark exhibits to record them as is proper for a museum.

Hi Sharon, I wanted to let you know that the Pioneer Museum closes when it does because there is no heat in the building and when it cools off a lot outside, it gets cold pretty fast and stays cold. It opens on May 15, unless that falls on a Sunday as it is not open on Sundays. I hope you can come back during the season sometime. After looking around the state of South Dakota's museums, I saw that the Pioneer Museum has a longer season than most smaller museums that are run by volunteers.
